Morris J Swenson October 20, 1932 ~ July 4, 2023

Morris J. Swenson, known to many as “Swens” or “Coach”, passed away peacefully on July 4 in Blanding due to complications from wuss-itis.
Born October 20, 1932 in Orem, UT, to John Eldon Swenson and Erma Jarmin Swenson, he lived a vibrant, fulfilling life characterized by his dedication to education, sports, and his family.
Swens graduated from Pleasant Grove High School where he was a dedicated student-athlete in football and baseball. He also showcased his musical talents by playing the clarinet and saxophone in the school band.
His pursuit of knowledge led him to Snow College, where he graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Science. He furthered his education at Utah State University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Science.
In between his educational pursuits he was drafted into the Korean War where he was Staff Sergeant. He served valiantly for two years (1952-1954).
Coach dedicated 32 years of his life to teaching and coaching at San Juan High School. He coached a variety of sports, including football, wrestling, basketball, and baseball. He also had the privilege of officiating in all those sports.
His commitment to the students extended beyond the classroom and sports field, as he also taught driver’s education. His students fondly remember him for his humor, accepting bribes in the form of Pepsi and Twinkies, and his gentle snoring as a sign of their successful driving.
His dedication to sports was not limited to coaching. He served as a referee for San Juan County athletic games and managed the swimming pool and recreation department during the summer.
His contributions to the community were recognized with numerous awards, including “The Wrestling Coach of the Year” in 1979, the “Favorite Teacher Award” multiple times, and the “Distinguished Service Award” from the Utah High School Athletic Association in 2007.
In 2012, he was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame for officiating, and in 2022 he became the first teacher inducted into the San Juan High School Teacher Hall of Fame.
Swens had a passion for sports, with softball being his favorite. He was a pitcher in the fast-pitch league, and he loved to teach others his skills. Away from the sports field, Swens enjoyed boating, golfing, hunting, and camping.
He was an avid gardener, ensuring nothing went to waste. Card games with friends were a favorite pastime, with Swens notorious for his playful attempts to cheat his way to victory.
The grandkids’ favorite game was to challenge him to say “I love you.” Some of his responses were, “nice to know you,” “ditto,” “yup,” (big grin) or “change the subject.”
He made every grandchild feel like they were his favorite. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Erma Swenson, his wife Connie Swenson, brothers LaVell and Merlin Swenson, and sons John and Mike Swenson.
He is survived by his siblings Dawnetta, Garn, and Elma Rae; his children Barbara, Blair (Paula), Craig (Heidi), Jim, Linda (Ed) Simmons; 16 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.
Coach instilled a great work ethic and commitment in his students, athletes, and family. He was famous for his quote, “Gotta love it baby” to help motivate others to keep pushing forward not matter what curve ball life throws at you.
His dedication to education, sports, and his community will forever be remembered and cherished. Morris J. Swenson, or “Swens,” as he was affectionately known, will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
His legacy of dedication, integrity, and love for his family and community will continue to live on in the hearts of many.
