Reed Gene Hayes

October 23, 1937 ~ November 6, 2021

Reed Gene Hayes was born in Moab, UT on October 23, 1937, the second of five boys born to Edgar Bruce and Genevieve Johnson Hayes. He passed away on November 6, 2021.

Reed went to school for all 12 grades in Moab and graduated from Grand County High School in 1955.

He served in the Army from 1961 to 1963. He married Nelda Jean Steele in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 10, 1962.

Reed retired from the BYU Physical Plant in October 1999.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years; children Ken (Julie) Hayes, Ron (Terri) Hayes, Jesse (Rebecca) Hayes, Lori (Brian) Hartley, Lyle (Rhonda) Hayes, Jenny Hayes; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rex Hayes and Jim Hayes; and his cousin-brother, Danny Hayes.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dan Hayes and Kay Hayes.

Reed loved taking friends into Canyonlands and other areas of Southern Utah in 4-wheel drive vehicles or four-wheelers. He knew the area like the back of his hand.

He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings. He and his wife served a mission for the church in Nauvoo, IL.

Reed’s burial was in the Paradox Cemetery on November 9, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Paradox School.
