Rex Clifford Johnson

February 17, 1927 ~ December 5, 2020

Rex Clifford Johnson, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully December 5, 2020.

He was born February 17, 1927 on the Horsehead Homestead south of Eastland, UT. His heart and hands were tethered to the acreage in that part of the world.

Rex loved farming and had a great understanding of agricultural work. He grew up laboring alongside his parents, five brothers, and one sister clearing the sage and pinyons off the land and making it fruitful and productive for generations to come.

He met his sweetheart, Herma Lee Conn, in the halls of Monticello High School, and they married young and in love on December 1, 1945. They started their lives modestly, setting up home in an old converted granary.

Rex and Herma would go on to have seven children, and they worked together to instruct them in the ways of music, beauty, and (most importantly in the eyes of Rex) hardwork and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Rex was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and religion was a very important part of his life. He derived great comfort and strength from his faith, and served quietly and diligently in many callings.

Rex was there when the Eastland Branch Chapel was built, and his testimony was forged within those walls alongside many dear friends and family.

Rex left a legacy of hard work, obedience, and competitive card playing to inspire the succeeding generations.

He was proud of his posterity and hopeful for the happiness and success of his seven children, 34 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He prayed for them daily.

He is preceded in death by his wife (Herma Lee Conn), his son (Don Rex), his parents (Arile and Beata Johnson), and his six siblings and five of their spouses (Forrest and Maxine Johnson, Travest and Oral Johnson, Eldon and Nereece Johnson, Cloyd Johnson, Fay and Dewey Jensen, Max and Charlene Johnson).

He is survived by his children, Diane (Allan) Tracy, Bill (Julie) Johnson, Connie (Jerome) Hunt, Debra Johnson, Scott (Liesel) Johnson, and Penny Woodbury.

There will be a graveside viewing/memorial service for Rex Wednesday, December 9 at 11 a.m. at the Eastland Cemetery. Please dress warmly, bring a lawn chair, and plan on social distancing.
