Annual ATV Safari hits the trails this week
Scores of riders will explore San Juan County as the San Juan ATV Safari returns this week. A record number of visitors are set to enjoy spectacular scenery and cool weather that will make for comfortable rides from the high country to the low country.
The 22nd annual event starts on Wednesday, September 18, and concludes on Saturday, September 21.
The annual Safari starts Wednesday afternoon with riders checking in from Noon to 4 p.m. at the Blanding Visitors Center.
The Wednesday night ride begins at 5 p.m. from Blanding and 5:30 p.m. from Monticello, with crews leaving from both the Blanding and Monticello Visitor Centers to meet up at a central location for an authentic Navajo Taco dinner.
Riders are reminded to bring warm clothes for the ride home.
The Safari kicks off in earnest on Thursday with riders choosing between 19 guided trail rides throughout San Juan County.
There are about eight or nine guided rides each day to a wide variety of locations across San Juan County, from high mountains to desert canyons.
Among the trail offerings include Arch Canyon, Wooden Shoe, Shay Ridge, Piute Pass and elsewhere.
Trails originate from both Blanding and Monticello and will return to their origin town each day.
Each ride is rated from easy to expert and includes the mileage. Riders will meet each morning at 8 am, where they will be greeted by three experienced riders who are familiar with the trails that riders will tackle each day.
Following full-day rides on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the event concludes with the annual Safari Banquet at the San Juan Wellness Center in Blanding.
