Two dead at Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park
UPDATE:
The death of a six year old boy, and his mother are being investigated as a homicide and suicide in northern San Juan County.
San Juan County Sheriff's Office in a release shared that on January 8 at about 8:15 am park rangers in Canyonlands reported a suspicious vehicle parked in a no camping area near the Shafer Trail in the Island in the Sky District at Canyonlands National Park.
Park rangers arrived on the scene to find an unresponsive six-year-old boy inside the vehicle. Emergency lifesaving measures were immediately initiated with the boy transported to a local hospital, the boy was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
The sheriff's department also shared that another individual, later identified as the child's mother, was found deceased in the same area located outside of the vehicle.
The sheriff’s department shared that there is no evidence to suggest an ongoing threat to public safety, and that based on evidence the case is being investigated as a homicide and suicide.
Both the child and mother were reported missing by the husband/father in Colorado on January 7.
The bodies of the two individuals were sent to the medical examiner’s office for further examination.
In a statement the county sheriff’s department described the event as a “heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family during this incredibly difficult time.”

The sheriff's department also shared another individual was found deceased in the same area located outside of the vehicle. The sheriff's office shares the identity of one of the indiviuals was confirmed with next of kin notified with the identification process for the second individual ongoing.
The bodies of both individuals have been transported to the medical examiner's office for further examination.
The county sheriff's office shares that the incident remains an active investigation. The statement also shared
"Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy. Further information will be released as it becomes available and as it is appropriate to do so."
