Gary Torres is the new Canyon Country District Manager

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has selected Gary Torres as the permanent Canyon Country District Manager.

The Canyon Country District, comprised of the Moab and Monticello field offices, manages 3.6 million surface acres providing opportunities for recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and other multiple uses.

Torres brings an extensive portfolio of public lands management experience, most recently serving as the BLM Eastern States Acting State Director.

Before that, he served as BLM Green River District Manager, Monticello Field Manager, Acting District Manager in Canyon Country District and the Farmington District Office in New Mexico, and Deputy Division Chief for Fluid Minerals with BLM headquarters.

“Gary brings strong leadership to this important role,” said Acting State Director Anita Bilbao.

“His knowledge of southeastern Utah resources and issues, wisdom and management experience, along with kindness and sense of humor make him exceptionally qualified to serve as the Canyon Country District Manager.”

Torres grew up in Monticello with ties going back to his grandfather who lived in Price, UT and worked as a coal miner.

At an early age he learned to appreciate the value of the expansive public lands surrounding his home.

He began his career with the federal government as a mining engineer where he had a keen interest in interdisciplinary environmental planning, later becoming the supervisory planner for the Monticello and Moab offices.

“Southeast Utah is my home,” shared Torres. “I had some great experiences in various jobs, but it is good to be back in Utah and I look forward to working collaboratively with local communities, partners, and stakeholders.

“So many people care deeply about our amazing resources here in eastern Utah. I take my responsibility as a land steward seriously and greatly appreciate the vast landscapes and all they have to offer.

“It is an honor and a privilege to lead the talented and dedicated staff at the Canyon Country District Office.”
