Hearings on Bears Ears management options
Both virtual and in-person meetings are scheduled for the public to learn more about the Bear Ears National Monument Draft Resource Management Plan and Draft Environmental Impact Statement.
On March 8, the agencies initiated a public comment period for the Draft Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement, proposed recreational shooting closures, and proposed Areas of Critical Environmental Concern. Comments will be accepted through June 11, 2024.
The BLM and Forest Service will host seven public meetings. The open houses run from 6 to 8 p.m. and the agencies will provide brief presentations at 6 and 7 p.m.
Local meetings will be held at Utah State University in Blanding on Tuesday, April 23 and at Monument Valley High School in Monument Valley on Thursday, May 16..
Two virtual meetings will be held, the first on Tuesday, April 16 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and the second on Thursday, May 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. You can register to attend these meetings on Zoom.
Other in-person meetings are Thursday April 18 at Marriott University Park in Salt Lake City, on Monday, May 6 at Twin Arrows Casino Resort in Twin Arrows, AZ, and on Tuesday, May 7 at Marriott Courtyard in Albuquerque, NM.
The BLM and Forest Service state that they have incorporated considerable input from the Bears Ears Commission, the State of Utah, other cooperating agencies, and the public into the draft plan.
The plan, associated documents and instructions for submitting comments electronically are available on the BLM National NEPA Register.
Comments may be submitted through the “Participate Now” function on the BLM National NEPA Register or mail input to ATTN: Monument Planning, BLM Monticello Field Office, 365 North Main, Monticello, UT 84535.
The 1,212 pages found in volumes 1 and 2 of the draft plan lay out five alternatives, including an identified preferred alternative, for the management of the 1.36 million acre monument located in San Juan County.
