Bus burns to ground on Highway 191 south of La Sal Junction

While none of the 36 people onboard a bus were injured, the bus was totally destroyed after a fire on Highway 191 south of La Sal Junction on May 9.
A total of 36 people, mostly sixth grade students from the Denver area, were on a bus that started to experience mechanical difficulties while traveling north bound near milepost 101 at about 9:30 Friday morning.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the bus pulled over and everyone was evacuated before the bus caught fire and was fully engaged in flames.
By the time crews arrived, the bus was already destroyed. The students and their chaperones were picked up by a local school bus and transported to the junior high school in Moab. A tow company is expected to assess the situation when it arrives, while the tour bus company is sending another bus to transport the students.
Highway 191 was shut down for a couple of hours but is now open. Utah Highway Patrol, San Juan County, Monticello City Fire Department and other agecnies responded to the scene.
