Construction begins on SR 95 Cottonwood Wash Bridge

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has begun building a new bridge on State Route 95 (SR-95) over Cottonwood Wash, approximately nine miles west of Blanding.
The road will be reduced to one lane with temporary signals directing one-way traffic. Motorists are required to wait until green for their turn to proceed. Motorists can expect delays of 10 minutes or more from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. A wide load restriction is in place for over 11 feet wide.
The new bridge will replace the aging bridge, accommodate local and tourist traffic, and address large storm events that result in large volumes of water passing through Cottonwood Wash.
Work will include the removal and replacement of asphalt on both sides of the new bridge to tie-in and make a smoother ride The project is expected to continue throughout the summer.
The project comes after the Cottonwood Wash Bridge was closed in August 2021 when a routine bi-annual inspection of the bridge reveled potential issues with erosion–or scouring–in the sandstone abutment that held the bridge in place.
Following the discovery an immediate closure was announced and UDOT awarded an emergency repair contract which resulted in the bridge reopening in November 2021. At the time an award was also given for the design of a future bridge replacement, that has led to the current project which will as stated above address large storm events that result in large volumes of water passing through Cottonwood Wash.
