Lisbon Valley Copper Mine reopens

Local, state, and federal officials gathered in Lisbon Valley to celebrate the reopening of the Copper One Mine, marking a significant step forward for economic growth and job creation in the area.
The event brought together officials froim Mariana Minerals, with Utah Governor Spencer Cox and other state officials, in addition to San Juan County Commissioners Sylvia Stubbs and Lori Maughan, Chief Administrative Officer Mack McDonald, representatives from the CMEI Department, and staff from the San Juan County Economic Development Department and Planning & Zoning.
The Lisbon Valley mine is a copper extraction operation where ore is removed from the earth and processed to produce copper, a critical mineral used in electrical wiring, infrastructure, renewable energy systems, and modern technology. The mine plays an important role in supplying materials essential to both everyday life and national industries.
Leaders emphasized the importance of the mine’s reopening for the local economy. Commissioner Lori Maughan highlighted the direct impact on residents, stating, “This mine represents real, measurable opportunity. It brings good-paying jobs—jobs that can support families and creates stable employment in an area that needs it.”
Maughan added, “Today is not just the opening of a mine—it is an opportunity for jobs, stability, and for people to build a future here in San Juan County.”
San Juan County, while rich in natural beauty and resources, continues to face economic challenges, including workforce retention and limited local employment opportunities.
Officials noted that projects like the Lisbon Valley mine help address these challenges by creating jobs and encouraging residents—especially younger generations—to remain in the area.
In addition to employment opportunities, the mine is expected to contribute to the county through increased tax revenue, which supports schools, infrastructure, emergency services, and other needs. Local businesses are also anticipated to benefit from increased economic activity tied to the operation.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox emphasized the broader significance of the project, noting its role in strengthening the state and national economy while reducing reliance on foreign sources for critical minerals.
Local officials described the reopening as a step toward long-term economic stability and responsible development in San Juan County. The project reflects ongoing efforts to balance economic growth with community needs and stewardship of the land.
