Silvia Stubbs ~ San Juan County Commissioner, District 2
A Lifetime of Service, Respect, and Opportunity
Serving the people of San Juan County as their commissioner has been one of the greatest honors of my life. As I seek reelection for a second term, I do so with gratitude for the trust placed in me and a sincere desire to continue making a difference.
I was born and raised in the beautiful country of Argentina. During my teenage years, I had the opportunity to live with an American family for almost five years. They frequently spoke about the freedoms enjoyed in the United States. I was especially impressed by their confidence in expressing different opinions without fear, their appreciation for freedom of the press, and their belief that citizens could question their government.
Those experiences left a lasting impression on me. I learned that freedom is precious and should never be taken for granted.
I also developed a deep appreciation for private property rights. Growing up in a country where homeownership was uncommon, I recognize what a blessing it is to own a home, provide security for one's family, and build something to pass on to future generations.
These experiences shaped the values that guide my public service today.
My Commitment to Serving Others
I have always believed in looking for opportunities to serve others, showing kindness, and finding ways to make things better. My mind is constantly searching for possibilities to improve the lives of those around me.
Before becoming a commissioner, I spent more than 20 years in education, helping develop programs for children, families, and adults. I helped create early childhood education opportunities and GED programs that enabled hundreds of individuals to complete their education.
I have a special place in my heart for children, young people, and our senior citizens. I believe every generation deserves opportunities, respect, and a community that cares about its well-being.
Turning Ideas Into Results
During my first term, I have worked to identify funding opportunities, establish partnerships, and bring additional resources into San Juan County.
Among the initiatives I have helped advance are:
$50,000 from the Larry H. Miller Foundation to support local businesses, economic development, and community improvements.
Approximately $60,000 in critical minerals educational funding, supporting curriculum development and educational opportunities through Utah State University and youth programs.
Funding for a multicultural outdoor classroom, providing opportunities to celebrate and teach the history and traditions of the cultures represented in our county.
Renewed efforts on the Navajo Mountain water project, working with engineers and other partners to move this important infrastructure project forward.
Support for senior services, including efforts to improve programs serving our elderly residents in remote communities.
Youth recreation and community improvements, including soccer field improvements and efforts to provide playground opportunities in Westwater.
I believe that finding outside funding and building partnerships can help us accomplish important projects while reducing the financial burden on local taxpayers.
As a member of the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition, I have worked with neighboring counties on regional infrastructure and economic development opportunities.
I have also made it a priority to invite state legislators to San Juan County so they can see firsthand our resources, understand our challenges, and recognize the opportunities we have to offer.
Respecting Our Differences and Protecting Our Rights
One of San Juan County's greatest strengths is the diversity of its people, cultures, and traditions. I deeply respect the different communities that make up our county.
I believe we can disagree without being disrespectful. Every resident deserves to be heard, regardless of their background, beliefs, or political opinions.
No citizen should feel intimidated, dismissed, or afraid to express a different opinion at a public meeting. Respectful disagreement is an essential part of democracy.
As an elected official, I believe my responsibility is to listen to and serve all residents, not only those who agree with me.
I also believe that protecting private property rights, individual freedoms, and responsible use of taxpayer dollars must remain priorities in county government.
Looking Toward the Next Four Years
San Juan County faces significant challenges, including affordable housing, employment opportunities, reliable water infrastructure, and the rising cost of living.
We must create an environment where small businesses can succeed, young families can afford homes, seniors receive the services they deserve, and our children have opportunities to build their futures here.
I want to continue supporting responsible economic development, strengthening educational partnerships, protecting our natural resources, and completing important projects already underway.
I believe we must carefully consider government decisions that increase the cost of building or owning a home. We should be looking for ways to make housing more attainable, not placing additional obstacles in the way of families.
Why I Am Asking for Your Vote
I am seeking reelection because I believe there is more work to accomplish. Many worthwhile projects require persistence, cooperation, and time to bring to completion.
To me, public service is not about holding a title. It is about listening, treating people with kindness, recognizing opportunities, and following through on commitments.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have served San Juan County during these past four years. I respectfully ask for your continued trust, support, and vote so that I may continue working for the people and communities of our county.
My commitment remains the same: to serve with kindness, protect our freedoms and property rights, create opportunities for future generations, and build bridges of understanding and cooperation among our communities.
Together, we are stronger.
