Slow start dooms SJH boys in Moab

THE ROUND-UP
by Tad Barton
San Juan and Grand faced off January 15 in Moab, both teams in search of their first win in Region 15.
The Red Devils were all business from the tipoff to the final whistle, while the Broncos struggled early, ultimately digging themselves too deep of a hole to climb out of.
San Juan is now 0-3 in Region 15 after the 77-56 loss to Grand.
Grand outscored the visitors from San Juan by 14 points in the opening period, 22-8. The Red Devils continued to play red hot in the second quarter extending their lead to 24 points to take a 41-17 lead into the half.
It looked like the San Juan boys might pull off a comeback in the third quarter like the Lady Broncos had the night before. The Broncos used a solid effort to cut into the Red Devil’s huge lead. San Juan notched 23 points and stepped up their defense to hold Grand to 15. After three, the Broncos trailed by 16, 56-40.
Gaining momentum, the Broncos looked poised to complete an unlikely comeback. But Grand resumed their high scoring ways from the first half to out-score San Juan 21-15 and pick up a 77-56 win.
The Broncos were led by Tyrel Pemberton with 17 points, including six from beyond the three-point line.
DiQuan Lopez scored 16 points, nine coming from long range. Javen Ivins added seven points. Terrance Tate and Max Morley scored four each, while Eli Beck, Caleb Pugh and Kesian Barton had two points each.
San Juan hosts North Sevier Friday and South Sevier Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
