Snow totals look good after wet and wild January

A wet and wild series of storms in mid January has had a dramatic impact on the year-to-date water totals in San Juan County. A four-day storm closed schools and businesses and more than doubled the amount of water in the mountain snowpack.

Monticello had 481 percent of the typical precipitation for the month of January and the year-to-date precipitation in Blanding is 181 percent of normal.

The mountain snowpack on February 1 is higher than in all but four of the previous 24 years. The end result should be adequate water resources through the summer months.
