Busy week for Broncos

THE ROUND-UP
by Tad Barton
Whether at a track meet, a soccer game, golf, baseball, softball, or even volleyball, the San Juan Broncos were busy competing across the state of Utah.
The boys and girls track teams traveled to Manti, UT to take part in the Temple View Qualifier with the girls finishing seventh out of a field of 14 teams, and the boys placed eleventh out of 16 teams.
Baseball hit the road dropping a contest with Juab 9-3 on Tuesday, April 3 before returning home and splitting a double header with Richfield, 9-8 and 4-1 on Thursday.
Softball traveled to Salt Lake City to play in a tournament, but the results of those games were unknown at press time.
Golf
The Lady Bronco golf team was in Richfield where they played an 18-hole tournament and placed third. San Juan has been improving weekly despite not being able to practice the first few weeks of the season.
The Broncos are currently in sixth place in Region 15 but are only 24 strokes out of fifth.
Soccer
The first ever boys soccer team at San Juan got their inaugural season off to a good start with a win over Emery last week. Neither team managed a score in the first half.
Landon Pemberton scored the Broncos first goal in school history to get San Juan on the board with a 1-0 lead. Emery scored about ten minutes later, tying the game 1-1.
With roughly 13 minutes left in the game, Ethan Vess found the back of the net after he received a pass from a teammate and out ran Emery’s last defender.
San Juan then held off the Spartans for the remainder of the game to record the 2-1 victory. Goalie Ammon Ward finished the game with eight saves.
Coach Jay Jones said, “The boys played hard and had a great time.”
In their second game of the year, San Juan faced off against Grand on Tuesday, April 4. The results weren’t as positive as their opening game, as the Broncos fell to the Red Devils 9-0.
Five Broncos recorded shots on goal, including Pemberton, Vess, Isaiah Hannigan, Gavin Jones, and Zander Lott. Goalie Ammon Ward finished the game with nine saves. Despite the lopsided score, Coach Jones was pleased with his team, as they fought hard throughout the game and never gave up.
Baseball
The San Juan baseball started their week by taking a long bus ride to Nephi to take on the Juab Wasps on Tuesday, April 3.
Juab got on the scoreboard first when they scored two runs in the bottom of the second, giving them a 2-0 lead. After holding the Broncos scoreless in the top of the third, Juab added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to increase their lead to 5-0.
San Juan finally got the goose egg off the board in the top of the fourth when T.J. Johnson scored on an error, making the score 5-1. The Wasps quickly got that run back in the bottom of the fourth when they scored their sixth run of the game.
San Juan added two more runs to their score in the top of the fifth inning, cutting Juab’s lead to three runs, 6-3. The Wasps responded by adding three more runs, one in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth inning and then held the Broncos scoreless, handing San Juan a 9-2 non-region loss.
On Thursday, San Juan was back home in Blanding to take on the Richfield Wildcats. Despite out-hitting the Wildcats, the Broncos fell behind early in the contest and never recovered.
Richfield posted one run in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning by both teams, San Juan cut Richfield’s lead to just one run in the sixth inning when Corbin Palmer scored from third on a past ball.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to three, 4-1. The Broncos were unable to score any runs in the top of the seventh, giving Richfield the win.
T.J. Johnson and Palmer each finished the game two for three at the plate with Palmer scoring the Broncos only run. Davis Mendoza and Elijah Lee were both one for three and Baylr Eldredge was one for four.
Palmer was the starting pitcher for the Broncos, pitching five innings in which he gave up three hits and struck out eight. Shaw Nielson came on in relief in the sixth inning where he gave up two hits and had one strike out.
In the night cap, the Broncos got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Eldredge scored on a fielder’s choice. The Wildcats tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the second before San Juan scored their second run of the game in the bottom of the inning to go up 2-1.
That lead was short lived, as Richfield pushed six runs across the plate in the top of the third to take a commanding 7-2 lead over San Juan.
The Broncos pulled within three runs in the bottom of the fourth when T.J. Johnson drove in Palmer with an RBI single and then scored off a Tanner Johnson’s single, making the score 7-4 heading into the fifth inning.
Richfield nudged their lead back to four runs in the top of the sixth after scoring one run to lead 8-4. Trailing by four heading into the bottom of the seventh the Broncos never gave up.
Nielson got things started for San Juan, reaching on a single. Kash Shumway and Mendoza also reached base and scored, making the score 8-7 in favor of the Wildcats.
With the bases loaded and one out facing a 1-2 count, Lee singled to center field, scoring Eldredge and Palmer to give the Broncos a 9-8 walk off win over the Wildcats.
San Juan was led offensively by Palmer who was three for five at the plate with two RBIs. Lee, Eldredge, and T.J. Johnson all finished two for five with Lee and Johnson driving in two runs each.
