Football and volleyball fall in quarter-finals

THE ROUND-UP
by Tad Barton
The fall sports season at San Juan High wrapped up this past week with the football and volleyball teams losing in the Quarter-Finals.
The Lady Broncos volleyball team started their post season play with a win over Juab before losing to North Sanpete and South Summit, while the football team was defeated by South Summit 40-12.
San Juan started the 3A State Volleyball Tournament with a convincing win over Juab. The Broncos cruised to a 3-0 win, defeating the Wasps 25-16, 25-11, 25-18.
The win over Juab set San Juan up against Region 15 foe North Sanpete; the two teams split their two games during the regular season.
The Hawks came out and put the Broncos in a hole by winning the first set 18-25, but the Broncos bounced back with a 25-14 win in the second set.
North Sanpete took over in the third set with a convincing 14-25 win and then finished San Juan off 21-25 in the fourth.
The loss to North Sanpete knocked the Lady Broncos down to the consolation bracket, where they faced the South Summit Wildcats.
Once again the Broncos fell behind early before losing 3-1 in four tightly contested sets, (21-25, 25-23, 24-26, 19-25). The loss eliminated San Juan from the 3A State Tournament, ultimately ending their season.
The Broncos finished their season 18-11 overall with a 9-3 record in Region 15.
Football
San Juan’s quarterfinal matchup against number one ranked South Summit got off to a great start with the Broncos jumping out to an early 6-0 lead when Dylan Ivins pulled down a 25 yard strike from Baylr Eldredge in the first quarter.
South Summit would answer in the second quarter with two scores to go up 13-6.
Just before the half, the Broncos appeared to have cut into the lead when Eldredge ran the ball into the end zone with under a minute left in the half.
But a holding call nullified the score, leaving San Juan down seven at the intermission.
The third quarter was all South Summit as the Wildcats scored 19 points to extend their lead to 33-6. The Wildcats would add one more score in the fourth to go up 40-6 before San Juan scored the final touchdown of the game on a one yard run from Ivins.
The point after was no good, resulting in a final score of 40-12.
