San Juan volleyball team wins another, is ranked number one

The San Juan High School volleyball team continued to cruise through their schedule with another win last Thursday, September 26 over Carbon. The Lady Dinos did provide a bit of a challenge, taking the Lady Broncos to five sets before succumbing.

San Juan head coach Kelli Keyes said homecoming week may have been a factor, and her girls struggled to pass and communicate and committed several hitting errors throughout the first four sets. But in the fifth set, they found their rhythm and finished strong.

It’s the Lady Broncos’ eighth win in a row. They improve to 14-2 on the year and 4-0 in Region 12 and  also sit atop the 3A UHSAA RPI, ahead of Richfield and Morgan.

That mark will be tested this week when Richfield comes to town to close out the teams’ season series. Coach Keyes said Richfield is a tough test and it’s always emotional when former Lady Broncos coach Cassy Moon returns to town.

San Juan began the week at home against Carbon on Tuesday, October 1.

Reflecting on the season to this point, Keyes said, “It has been really good. Our region is very good. We’re all in the top ten in 3A. That helps us prepare for state.

“The girls have been really trying to work as a team and figure things out for themselves before we have to tell them what to do.

“They’re really smart and know what they do wrong. They just have to work it out as a team.

In a bit of news, Keyes reported that Whitney Ivins was recently named Deseret News player of the week. She is very capably filling the shoes of the departed Bodell Nielson as setter and outside hitter.

Keys said that Maddie Palmer has really stepped up to become a rock for the team.

Coach Keyes knows the homestretch of the season will be a challenge. “Every team is going to play out of their heads against us because they want to beat us,” she said. “So we just have to expect that they’re going to come for us.”

The big test against the Richfield Lady Wildcats begins at 5 p.m. Thursday night in the San Juan High School gymnasium.
