Monument Valley volleyball beats Whitehorse in Battle of the Drum

The Whitehorse High School volleyball team suffered a huge defeat in the last home game of the season against their rivals, Monument Valley, on Thursday, October 10. The straight-sets loss was especially sour for the Lady Raiders since it was the Battle of the Drum and homecoming.

The homecoming game attendance was the biggest yet for the team this year. The gym was packed with Whitehorse volleyball supporters and fans for the last game of the season and senior night.

Monument Valley opened strong with consistent aces from senior Christel Tsosie. The Lady Raiders struggled to pass, and the Lady Cougars began to build a lead.

The Lady Raiders finally gained a good pass to set up for the hit, but Monument Valley soon responded with a kill from middle hitter Jamika Nelson. Despite their effort, Whitehorse was unable to establish any momentum during the first set, and fell to the Lady Cougars 25-6.

In the second set, the Lady Raiders had more confidence in their game. Although, they couldn’t get a good pass for the first few points, they managed to get the ball over the net.

Monument Valley responded with quick tips and serves, but Whitehorse got digs from senior Alyzea Benally and junior Tiara Parkett and kills from junior Rueshaunda Jim. Still, the Lady Cougars won the second set 25-14.

In the third set, the Lady Raiders had the first lead of the game, then Monument Valley took it back. Whitehorse struggled to cover defensively against the Lady Cougars’ quick tips at the net.

The Lady Raiders struggled to keep pace, and Monument Valley won the final set, once again 25-14. With the win, the Cougars retain possession of the drum.

The Whitehorse volleyball team honored their four seniors during senior night. Lady Raider seniors include Alyzea Benally, Kiiyana Clah, Rhiannon Lansing, Tewakeedah Martin, and Soyer Toney.

The Whitehorse volleyball team faced Pinnacle in a region 19 match on Tuesday, October 15 in Price, UT. They’ll close out their regular season with a non-region match in Rockpoint, AZ on Tuesday, October 22.

Whitehorse has one more chance to take the drum back from Monument Valley during the fall sports season when the schools’ football teams meet next Friday, October 25 in Monument Valley.
