Buckaroo golfers roll in Colorado

This week, the Monticello golf teams deviated from what was supposed to be Monticello’s lone home match of the season when they traveled to Colorado a week early due to poor course conditions at the Hideout.
As such, the teams rose early on Friday, April 12 and traveled to the Adobe National Golf Course outside of Grand Junction, CO for their Region 19 matches.
The boys team arrived in Colorado intent on winning four straight region matches, and that they did, besting Green River by 20 shots – 416 to 436.
Britton Brewer was the low Buck golfer after shooting a 100. He edged out Taylor Torgerson who carded a round of 101.
Dylan Bird was the next lowest Monticello golfer in the clubhouse with a 106. Finishing fourth on the team was Boston Freestone, who shot a 109.
Buck golfers Wyatt Fullmer and Breckyn Hoggard shot 111 and 113 to round out the Monticello scores on the day.
This week, the Monticello ladies golf team brought four golfers to the Region 19 match against a complete Pinnacle team and a lone Green River participant.
Tymbr Black maintained her top ranking in Region 19 after firing a solid round of 101.
Olivia Chamberlain finished second on the team, shooting a 111. Chamberlain was followed by Kennedy Brewer who shot a 134 for her round.
Monticello’s fourth golfer, Brooklyn Holt, shot a 144 to complete a team score of 490. That was good enough to best Pinnacle, who shot a team total of 603.
The teams will continue Region 19 play on Thursday, April 18. They’re hoping to finally play a home match at the Hideout in Monticello.
Monticello Baseball
The Buckaroo baseball team (0-5, 0-6) finally hosted their first true home series of the season when they welcomed the 2A Central Millard Eagles (0-4, 5-7) to town for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9.
With Mark Beh on the mound for game one, the Bucks gave up three runs in the first and second innings before settling down to play shutout ball in the third and fourth innings.
After giving up single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Bucks gave up two more in the seventh.
Offensively, MHS could only counter with two runs in the first inning and one in the sixth as they dropped the game 10-3.
Bucks Zach Cecil and Weston Nebeker led off the game with a pair of doubles, and a single by Mark Beh produced the Bucks’ first inning runs.
Another double by Zack Cecil in the sixth inning led to him crossing the plate for the Monticello’s final run of the game.
Devin Hatch also had a single in the fourth inning to complete the Bucks hit total of five for the game.
Once again, the Bucks struggled in the field, committing seven errors.
In the second game, Paxton Christensen took the mound for Monticello. The Bucks started strong and led after the first inning, 2-1.
When Zach Cecil hit a lead-off home run, Weston Nebeker walked and was driven in by singles from Mark Beh and Kayden Draper.
Monticello added to the lead when Paxton Christensen drew a walk and was brought home by a single from Jaxon Wells.
With the Bucks cruising 3-1, the game seemed to be going well for Monticello and gave the team hope for winning their first game of the season... until the third inning.
Millard exploded for10 runs in the top of the inning. The Bucks countered with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning scored by Mark Beh and Kayden Draper.
But the damage was done, and Monticello’s nice lead was flipped into an 11-5 deficit.
The Eagles tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning to take the rule-shortened game 16-5.
The pair of losses dropped Monticello to 0-7 in 2A Central play, securing a fourth place standing in the division.
However, Monticello had the chance to get back at the Eagles on Friday, April 12 when they traveled to Fillmore to play on Millard’s home field.
The Bucks started with Weston Nebeker on the mound with the hope of securing the team’s first win of the season.
This hope was likely dashed in the first inning as the Bucks gave up four runs.
That was followed by Eagle runs in the second, third, and fourth innings.
Monticello could only muster two hits in the game – singles by Kayden Draper and Paxton Christensen that produced no runs.
The result was a 9-0 shutout loss, dropping the Buckaroos to 0-8 in the 2A Central and 0-9 overall.
The Bucks will take this week off and after a solid week of practice, they hope to get on the winning side of the equation when they face the 2A Central division-leading Gunnison Valley Bulldogs (6-0, 14-5) on Tuesday, April 23 in Gunnison.
Monticello will follow that up with their final home game of the season on Thursday, April 25 when they host the San Juan Broncos (4-10).
It will be the senior recognition game, so come out and support the team and show appreciation to the seniors.
Monticello Track
The Monticello track and field teams completed their fifth meet of the season, once again traveling to Price to compete in the Carbon Invitational on Saturday, April 13 at the Carbon High School track.
With ten boys teams and 12 girls teams in attendance, many from 2A and 3A schools, the meet provided good competition for the teams looking to improve and find some consistency.
The Lady Bucks had a good meet, scoring a team high 35.5 points on their way to an eighth place finish. The host Carbon Dinos won the girls meet, scoring 137 points.
In the sprint events, Presley Lewis placed ninth after running a 13.86 in the 100-meter.
Tory Johnson placed ninth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.84.
In the middle distances, Lily Long ran a 2:43 in the 800-meter, placing fifth.
In the distance events, Lily Long placed second in the 1600 when she ran a 5:44.
She followed that up with a third place finish in the 3200, logging a time of 12:59.
In the field events, Naomi Mantz jumped 4-10.00 to place second in the High Jump.
The Monticello boys had a very good meet, finishing in fourth place with a solid 71 points.
Once again, Grand County won the boys meet, scoring 132 total points.
In the sprints, Reed Hedglin ran a time of 11.66 to finish third in the 100-meter dash.
Lucas Hatch recorded a ninth place finish with a time of 12.01.
He followed that up with an eighth place finish in the 200 with a 24.60.
As usual, Monticello placed well in the middle distance and long distance events.
Alan Pettit finished third in the 800-meter, running a time of 2:12.
Teammate Cory Bunker scored a point when he finished eighth in the 800, recording a time of 2:18.
Adam Bunker won the 1600 with a time of 4:45 and followed that with a win in the 3200 running a time of 10:14.
Alan Pettit finished fourth in the 1600 with a time 0f 4:54. He followed that with a fifth place finish in the 3200, running a time of 10:47.
Cory Bunker recorded a run of 4:59 to place ninth in the 1600.
In the field events, Cory Bunker placed fourth in the Javelin, throwing it 125-07. Adam Bunker won the High Jump, clearing 6-02.00.
Monticello’s Sprint Medley Relay team ran a time of 3:56 and was good enough to win the event.
The Monticello track teams will have the week off but will be back in action on Friday, April 27 for the Eastern Utah Championships to be held in Blanding at the San Juan High School track.
