Monticello High School finishes second in 1A Deseret News All-sports awards

Every year since 1978, the Deseret News has monitored twelve high school boys and girls sports and awarded points for first through eighth place state championship finishes.
At the end of the school year, the scores are tallied and the DesNews awards what it calls the All-sports awards for all classes 1A-6A.
This season, Monticello High School finished second behind the Panguitch Bobcats for the 1A All-sports award.
The Buckaroos scored 66.5 points to the Bobcats’ 79.5.
Monticello’s high finish was driven by boys state championships in cross-country, wrestling, and track and field.
The boys tallied 41.5 of Monticello’s total points by scoring 5.5 in football, 4.0 in golf for fifth place, and 2.0 in basketball for their seventh place finish.
The Buckaroo boys were at the top of the list if only boys sports were counted. Monticello boys scored 41.5 points, with Panguitch the second highest earner in boys sports with 39.5.
The Lady’s contributed 8.0 points as the state runners-up in volleyball, 6.0 in cross-country for finishing third, and 5.0 in track and field for fourth.
The Panguitch Lady Bobcats dominated 1A competition this season, claiming four state championships in volleyball, cross-country, basketball, and track and field.
The Bobcat boys were also very good, but not quite as good as the girls.
They took four state runners-up titles in cross-country, basketball, wrestling, and track and field.
Panguitch has won the last six 1A All-sports titles and is only one award away from tying Saint Joseph, who won or tied for seven straight 1A All-sports awards from 2006-07 to 2012-13.
Monticello last won an All-sports title in 1991-92.
In fact, Monticello won six of the first fifteen all-sports awards claiming titles in 1983-84, 1984-85, 1987-88, tied with Kanab in 1988-89, and two more back-to-back titles in 1990-91, 1991-92.
San Juan High School won its lone 2A All-sports award in 2010-11 and missed out on a top ten finish in 3A this year.
This season, for the first time in All-sports history, the 2017-2018 award winners repeated in 2018-19 when Lone Peak claimed the 6A title, Corner Canyon the 5A title, Desert Hills claimed the 4A title, Morgan the 3A crown and Millard was the 2A winner.
It’ll be interesting to see how Monticello fares next season as it makes the move up to 2A with seemingly strong returning teams in cross-country, volleyball and wrestling.
One thing is certain, all Buckaroo teams will play hard and to win as they proudly represent Monticello.
