Monticello wrestling team opens 2020 strong

The Monticello Buckaroo wrestlers are back in action after the holiday break. They attended the 2A Duals the first weekend back where they faced nine other 2A teams. 

The Buckaroos finished in seventh after defeating North Sevier, Kanab, and the JV All- star team. They also faced teams from Beaver, Enterprise, North Summit, Duchesne, Millard, and Altamont. 

Brevin Olson led the team, finishing 6-2 with three wins by fall and a technical fall. Paxton Christensen and Robert Musselman each earned five wins for the weekend with Christensen at 5-3 and Musselman at 5-4. Zach Cecil was 4-4 for the Buckaroos.  

Finishing the weekend with three wins each were Tuff Adair at 3-3 and Dillon Slack at 3-2, both earning all their wins by fall. 

Josh Wheeler and Tyler Thayn each earned two wins for the Buckaroos. Cameron Bailey, Logan Draper and Oakley Adams each earned a win. Javlin Robison worked hard and represented the Buckaroos well on the JV All-Star team. 

Prior to the break, the team attended the Manti duals tournament where they defeated Monument Valley, Wayne, San Juan, Milford, and Carbon and tied with West. They were defeated by Manti, Richfield, and North Summit.  

Leading the team were Zach Cecil and Robert Musselman, who finished with 7-1 records. Brevin Olson, Tuff Adair, and Paxton Christensen also finished with only one loss, Olson earning six wins, Adair with four wins, and Christensen with five wins. 

Logan Draper earned four wins, Josh Wheeler finished with three wins, Dillon Slack earned two wins, and Oakley Adams earned a win. Also wrestling for the Buckaroos were Cameron Bailey and Tyler Thayn. Javlin Robison was 4-1 in the JV tourney and 1-1 in the varsity tournament. 

This week the Buckaroos will be in Kayenta, AZ on Wednesday for a quad meet beginning at 4 p.m. They will travel to Pagosa Springs, CO on Saturday. 

Next Wednesday, January 15, they will travel to Piedra Vista for a 4 p.m. dual and then Aztec for a 6 p.m. dual. Thursday, January 16 the Buckaroos will host their first home dual of the season, taking on Norwood and Nucla at 6 p.m. at MHS.
