At their first game at the state tournament on March 1, the Monument Valley girls basketball team didn’t go into the locker room at halftime.
Despite playing in an important state tournament game, the Lady Cougars prioritized a fan who has prioritized Monument Valley sports for over 30 years.
Recognized at halftime of the game was super fan Patty Bedonie.
Each year the Utah High School Activities Association honors six super fans from across the state.
Following a presentation of a plaque, the entire Monument Valley basketball team poured onto the floor to hug Patty as a way to say thanks for her years of support.
Speaking after the Cougars defeated Altamont 73-38, Head coach Terri James said Patty Bedonie really is a super fan. “Patty’s at every game, every practice. She drives that 50 minutes every day to watch her granddaughter play and practice.”
That attendance includes driving 21 miles from her home to the school. Due to road conditions that is a 50-minute drive in good weather.
Patty was nominated for her more than three decades of support to Monument Valley Cougars. She attends every game cheering on her granddaughter Precious Bedonie.
Precious shared in a postgame interview her thoughts on the award, “I’m really proud of her, (seeing her get the award) made me happy.”
After being nominated, Patty wrote “It is important for me to support and help the students. High School Activities allow family and community to get together and interact with the students in a positive way.”
Patty continues. “As Navajos, we traditionally teach our children to run in the morning and offer prayers at night. I enjoy watching the students play in their games, and it makes me happy to see them happy.”
