The Bronco baseball team has steadily been among the top four teams in 2A all season long. On Monday, April 11 San Juan split a 2A East doubleheader with Duchesne, beating the Eagles 16-12 in game one, but losing game two 8-4.
They closed out the past week with a steady 15-4 victory over the Monticello Buckaroos on Thursday, April 14 to improve to 12-7 on the year. The Broncos are ranked #4 in the 2A standings at the press deadline.
Junior Garett Young leads San Juan batting with a very impressive .492 average with 30 hits in 61 at-bats. He’s followed by sophomore Parker Snyder who’s batting .425.
Young and junior Jerzy Nieves are tied for a team-high 20 RBIs. Senior Maddax Lee leads the Broncos with two home runs. Collin Baker and Young have one apiece. Young has hit seven doubles with two triples. Baker has six doubles and three triples.
Nieves has led the way for San Juan on the mound, picking up seven wins on the season. He has struck out 33 batters in just 26.2 innings pitched. Senior Jace Palmer is credited with two wins and 22 strikeouts in 24.2 innings of work.
The Broncos only had only one region matchup left this season, a home doubleheader with #9 North Sevier on Tuesday, April 19, which was played too late for us to include in this week’s paper.
They’ll close out the regular season at home against Farmington, NM on Monday, April 25 and at Spanish Fork on Friday, April 29.
San Juan is eyeballing a top-five finish in the 2A standings and getting prepped for the 2A state tournament, which begins on Saturday, May 7.
