Bronco girls grab win, head into tough week

Over the course of the past couple weeks the San Juan High School girls basketball team played four key Region 19 games and closed out the season series against a local rival in a non-region contest.
It was a tough stretch for the Broncos, but a highlight came this past Saturday, February 4 when they beat the Enterprise Wolves in the San Juan High School gym.
San Juan lost to Enterprise the first time they faced them this season 47-40 on the road January 13, but got revenge this past Saturday in front of their own crowd.
The Wolves opened the scoring, but after the Broncos took the lead on a Shaylin Nez three-point basket just over a minute into the game they never trailed again.
San Juan led 18-8 after one quarter. Enterprise closed the gap in the second quarter, but the Broncos held on to lead 25-19 at the halftime break.
The teams traded baskets in the third quarter and San Juan owned a slim 32-29 advantage heading into the final frame. They finished strong, outscoring the Wolves 18-11 to close out a nice 50-41 win.
It’s technically an upset for San Juan, and a good one. Enterprise is still ranked higher than San Juan, in 11th place in the 2A RPI standings. The Broncos are 14th with a 6-15 record.
San Juan’s other games in that time period didn’t go as smoothly. On a road trip west January 27-28 they suffered a 78-43 loss to 2A #3 Kanab and a 63-37 loss to #1 Beaver in region contests.
On Tuesday, January 31 San Juan closed out their non-region season series with the tough Dove Creek Bulldogs in Dove Creek with a 60-45 loss.
Before their win over Enterprise this past Saturday, the Broncos lost to #8 Parowan by a score of 73-51. To begin this week they were set for two more tough matchups against Region 19 foes to close out the regular season.
On Tuesday, February 7 San Juan hit the road to take on #6 South Sevier in Monroe, too late for our press deadline.
This Friday, February 10 it’s senior night for the Broncos when they host the #1 Beaver Beavers in the final regular season game of the year.
