The San Juan High School football team hasn’t lost to a region opponent since they returned to the 2A South in 2021. That stands to reason since they haven’t lost since the opening game of 2021 against Desert Hills.
The Broncos weren’t interested in letting any of that change this past Friday, September 16 when they hit the road to open region play in Monroe against the South Sevier Rams.
From the opening kickoff the ultimate outcome was never really in question. San Juan scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and added three in the second to take a 34-0 lead into halftime.
The Broncos scored the opening touchdown of the second half to increase their lead to 40-0 and a running clock for the rest of the game.
South Sevier finally got on the board with a third quarter TD, but San Juan added one last score to close out a 53-7 win and spoil the homecoming party in Monroe.
Junior quarterback Parker Snyder continues to tear it up for the Broncos. Coming into the game he was the leading passer in the nation.
Though he was overtaken this past week, he still has the second-most passing yards in the land (1,867) after a 237-yard effort against the Rams.
He threw two more touchdowns in the win and is in a three-way tie for fourth in the nation in that department with 22 on the season.
And he keeps getting it done on the ground also. He ran for 83 yards and two touchdowns this past Friday, bringing his season total to 443 yards and four TDs.
Zack Conway had a bounce-back game after struggling against Canyon View on September 9. The junior rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns against South Sevier. Just for fun, he added 43 receiving yards on the night.
Late in the game the San Juan second team put together a nice drive and sophomore JD Palmer ran the ball into the end zone from five yards out for the first varsity touchdown of his career.
Garrett Young and Jerzy Nieves were the touchdown receivers against the Rams. Young ended the night with 82 yards and Nieves added 49.
Defensively Trace Bennett and Brigham Nielson both had nine tackles in the win. Will Hoopes weighed in with seven, Jake Ivins got six, and Callen Burke made five stops. Nielson and Isaac Warner registered a sack apiece.
Senior Shawn Black had a great night in the PAT department, going five for five. He’s now 25 of 30 on the season for 83 percent.
With the win San Juan is 6-0 on the year, ranked #1 in the 2A RPI standings. They’re on the road again this week in Fillmore to take on the Millard Eagles.
The Eagles come into the game with a 1-5 record. Their only win was Friday, 50-7 against Grand County.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. this Friday, September 23 and you can catch the game on Friday Night Lights on Redrock 92 with streaming video at PictureItPalmer.com.
