Following a tough loss in Manti on September 26 the San Juan High School football team bounced back about as convincingly as possible in the 2025 Homecoming game this past Friday, October 3.
The Broncos dominated the rival Grand County Red Devils 81-6, setting a new school record for most points scored in a game. The final result was obviously never in doubt.
San Juan scored an astounding 47 points in the first quarter and added 27 in the second to lead 74-0 at halftime. Under running-clock rules in the second half, they added one more score.
With the Broncos’ C-Team defense on the field, the Red Devils finally got into the end zone on the final play of the game.
San Juan senior Jagger Nieves touched the ball five times in the game, and scored a touchdown every time he had it. He racked up three rushing touchdowns, one receiving, and even returned a Grand kickoff back for a TD.
Beau Yeomans threw five touchdown passes in the domination, and freshman Kreed Herring came on late in the game to throw the first touchdown of his varsity career.
Thomas Hardin and Landon Turk scored a rushing touchdown apiece. Tripp Palmer, Cole Duke, George McNaughtan, Andrew Nielson, and Randall Black all caught one touchdown pass each.
Max Stearns and Thomas Hardin led the defensive effort with five tackles apiece. Jayce Raisor, Pearce Holliday, Gaige Palmer, Remy Whatcott, and George McNaughtan all had four stops apiece.
McNaughtan sacked Grand quarterback Justin Kimmerle three times. Max Stearns had two sacks in the win. The Bronco defense forced four fumbles with Tyler Jacobsen recovering two of them and Ryus Blackhorse and Max Stearns scooping the other two.
Without the 70-yard touchdown pass that ended the game for Grand County the San Juan defense held the Red Devils to -12 yards of total offense.
There are several Broncos who are among the top players in the country in their respective statistics. Jagger Nieves’s 30 touchdowns on the year is third in the nation and first in the state of Utah by nine points.
His 190 points scored ranks fifth in the nation and also first in the state by 64 points. His 1,370 rushing yards is 24th in the country and leads the state of Utah.
George McNaughtan’s 12 sacks is tied for 26th in the nation and fifth among Utah players. Beau Yeomans’s 2,037 passing yards is 30th in the nation and 11th in the state. And Tripp Palmer’s 853 receiving yards is 36th nationwide and sixth in the state.
The Broncos will try to keep their momentum rolling this Thursday when they welcome the Emery Spartans to Blanding for the final home game of the regular season.
San Juan has dominated Emery in recent meetings, including their 60-14 win over the Spartans in the 2024 state championship game and a 56-48 barnburner in the 2022 semifinals.
The Broncos will honor their seniors before the opening kickoff, which is set for 7 p.m. Join Redrock 92 Radio and StreamUtah.Live for all the action live starting at 6:30.
