Broncos take third at 2A Duals in Richfield, two wrestlers compete in Ross Brunson All-Star matches

The San Juan High School wrestling team opened 2024 this past weekend in Richfield at the 2A Duals at Richfield High School. The tournament featured 11 2A teams including the Broncos.
San Juan won duals over South Sevier, Duchesne, North Summit, North Sevier, Enterprise, and Parowan to finish with 450 points – the third-most points at the tournament.
The Broncos were defeated by Millard, Beaver, and Kanab. Beaver went on to beat South Sevier in the championship dual and Millard scored the most points in the tournament.
JD Palmer led the way for San Juan with nine wins and one loss. All nine of his wins were by fall and he earned the third-most pins in the least time on the weekend.
Chad Yellow, Parker Snyder, and Trace Bennett all went 8-2 for the Broncos. Yellow earned six wins by fall, one by 10-6 sudden victory, and one by 10-2 major decision.
Snyder also had six wins by fall along with two by decision, 5-1 and 9-2. Bennett earned four wins by fall. Taylor Black was 7-3 with all seven wins by fall. He had the third-fastest pin in the tournament, in 17 seconds over Duchesne’s Jackson Stansfield.
Staley Dandy, Miken Keith, and Logan Keith all went 6-4 for the Broncos. Logan Keith had five wins by fall and one by 12-2 major decision. Dandy earned three wins by fall and one by 8-6 decision. Miken Keith also had three pins and a win by 7-3 decision.
Lynnox Benn registered five wins at the tournament, three by fall and one by 9-1 major decision. Deklan Helquist went 4-1 for San Juan with all four wins by fall.
Taren Bayles picked up four wins with three by fall. Jared Burke also got four victories for the Broncos with two pins. And El’Myron Begay wrestled hard for San Juan as well.
Two San Juan Broncos were honored this past week with invitations to wrestle in the annual Ross Brunson Utah All-Star tournament at Utah Valley University.
The event took place on Tuesday, January 9 with Chad Yellow competing against Emery’s Monty Christensen at 113 pounds and Taylor Black facing Wasatch’s Austin McNaughtan at 285 pounds.
The Broncos will reunite as a team for a trip to Cortez for a tri against Mancos and Montezuma-Cortez on Wednesday, January 10. You can catch that one live on StreamUtah.Live starting at 5 p.m.
This Friday and Saturday, January 12-13 the team is in Salina for the North Sevier Invitational. They’ll compete in Monticello next Wednesday, January 17.
