Buck wrestlers win Norwood Invite

It was a busy week for the Monticello High School wrestlers, who traveled to three different cities and culminated the week with a championship team trophy at the Norwood Invitational on Saturday, January 14.
The Buckaroos started the week off Wednesday, January 11 in Kayenta where they wrestled five duals, defeating Grey Hills Academy 45-6 and Pinon, AZ 54-18.
They ended in a tie with Kayenta 42-42 and were defeated by St. Johns 40-39 and Page 49-30. Tyson Wheeler and Tavon Black were each 4-0 at the duals. Thomas Fullmer was 1-0 for the day.
Finishing with one loss were Treydon Harris (3-1), Josh Wheeler (4-1), Chandler Henderson (3-1), Javlin Robison (2-1), and Zac Thayn (2-1). Landon Shumway and Ronnie Harris were each 3-2 on the day.
The Buckaroos traveled to Dolores, CO on Thursday, January 12 where Javlin Robison and Thomas Fullmer each had wins by fall over Cortez. Against Dolores, Landon Shumway, Ronnie Harris, Josh Wheeler, and Tyson Wheeler each earned wins by fall.
On Saturday, January 14 the Buckaroos took an early lead at the Norwood Invite and held it throughout the day. They finished with 171 points to bring home the first-place team trophy, 53 points ahead of second-place Ignacio, CO.
Monticello put seven wrestlers in the finals and brought home four first-place medals, Treydon Harris, Josh Wheeler, Javlin Robison, and Tavon Black. Harris had five wins by fall with Black and Robison each earning three. Wheeler had two falls and a 7-0 win.
Finishing second for the Buckaroos were Landon Shumway, Zac Thayn, and Camren Carpenter. Shumway and Thayn each earned two wins by fall on their way to the finals where they were defeated.
Tyson Wheeler and Ronnie Harris each earned third-place medals. Wheeler had four wins by fall and Harris had two wins by fall and a points win. Rounding out the Buckaroo points was Chandler Henderson with a fifth-place finish and a win by fall.
This week the Buckaroos hosted their senior night quad on Wednesday, January 18 and will travel to the Aztec, NM Tournament this Saturday, January 21.
Next week the Buckaroos will host the 1A Division B Tournament on Friday, January 27 with wrestling beginning at 10 a.m.
