Buckaroos beat Dove Creek on road

The Monticello High School baseball team got their second overall win and first official win of the season in Dove Creek Tuesday, April 9. The Bucks opened the game with a five-run first inning and led for the entirety of the game to win 14-4.
The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the first but Monticello stretched their lead with one run in the top of the second and three more in the top of the fifth.
Dove Creek rallied again for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 9-4, but the Buckaroos bookended the game exactly as they begun, with another five-run at bat in the top of the sixth.
Cache Young and Mason Atwood both drove in three runs apiece for the Bucks in the win. Atwood collected two hits and Young had one. Young also scored three runs in the game.
Jackson Keyes led the team with four hits, including two doubles, and he also scored three runs in the win. He was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate.
Camren Carpenter and Kooper Nielson collected two RBIs apiece and Carpenter had a hit. Triston Felix hit two doubles for Monticello and scored three runs. Zac Thayn and Arturo Gutierrez both had a hit and a run each.
Gutierrez led the team defensively with 11 putouts from the catcher position. Triston Felix got the win on the mound, allowing four runs on just two hits while striking out 12.
The Buckaroos suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of 2A East Region foe North Sevier on Tuesday, April 2, 1-0 and 19-5. They lost to San Juan 15-0 this past Friday, April 12.
Following the past week’s action Monticello is officially 1-7 on the year, ranked 12th in the 2A RPI standings. They have a couple matchups against tough local rivals this week.
On Tuesday, April 16 they hosted the Grand County Red Devils in a 2A East showdown. They’ll visit the San Juan Broncos on Friday, April 19.
Softball
The Monticello softball team dropped to 0-10 on the season with losses to San Juan, Grand County, Altamont, and Wayne over the course of the past two weeks. The Lady Bucks are 19th in the 2A RPI standings.
There’s just one game on the docket for the team this week, but it’s a tough one. They’ll host local rival and 2A Central Region foe Grand County on Thursday, April 18. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
