Buckaroos earn top honors among 1A teams at Utah Winter Classic

The Monticello High School wrestling team was back in action this past weekend at the 33-team Utah Winter Classic at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. The Buckaroos were the top-finishing 1A team in 15th place overall.
In the gold bracket John Leber and Tavon Black each earned fifth-place finishes. Leber earned four wins by fall to go 4-2. Black put four wins by fall in the books and an exciting 5-2 sudden victory win to go 5-2.
Camren Carpenter earned a sixth-place finish with two wins by fall and a 10-3 victory for a 3-2 weekend. Landon Shumway finished in seventh, earning a 12-0 major decision win and a 19-1 technical fall for a 2-2 record.
In the silver bracket Arturo Gutierrez finished in third place, earning a 16-1 technical fall, a 10-0 major decision, an exciting 3-0 victory, and a win by fall, finishing at 4-2.
Tyson Wheeler earned a fifth-place finish for Monticello with three wins by fall for a 3-3 record. Jarum Robison finished in seventh place, earning a win by fall.
In the JV tournament Diego Cortez and Miles Coleman each earned second-place finishes. Cortez earned four wins by fall and Coleman had three wins by fall and an 11-2 major decision win.
This week the Buckaroos travel to Kayenta, AZ on Wednesday, January 8 before attending the Rocky Mountain Invitational in Pagosa Springs, CO on Saturday, January 11.
On Wednesday, January 15 the team will host their final home dual of the season and they will honor their three seniors. Wrestling begins at 6 p.m.
