Buckaroos end regular season with tough loss

The Monticello Buckaroo football team made the long trek up to Randolph, UT on October 14 for a mid-afternoon game in 30-degree weather.

The Bucks’ long trip north ended with another loss on the season as the Rich Rebels established a physical run game in a 42-6 loss for the Buckaroos.

The Rebels scored on their second play of the game with a 70-yard touchdown run from the Rebels quarterback. After a three and out from Monticello and a deep punt, the Rebels’ second possession nearly resulted in a safety as the Rich quarterback was hit in the end zone.

A short Rebel punt gave the Buckaroos the ball in the Rich red zone, but a fourth-down attempt to convert was thwarted and the Rebels responded in their next possession with a 90-yard touchdown run.

A Monticello punt on their ensuing possession was returned for another touchdown and the Rebels had built a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second, the Buckaroos drove into the red zone but were unable to put points on the board.

The Rebels scored twice more in the second quarter to increase their lead to 35-0 at halftime and they added one more score in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback J.D. McDonald connected with senior receiver Logan Draper on a slant route across the middle.

After making the eight-yard catch, Draper turned on the jets and ran the remaining 60 yards for the score.

The point after kick was unsuccessful and the game ended with a 42-6 win for the Rebels.

Monticello enters the first round of the playoffs with a record of 2-7 and the #11 seed in the 1A playoffs.

They’ll travel to take on the #6 seed Layton Christian Academy Eagles (5-4) this Friday, October 22 at 3 p.m.
