Buckaroos Tee Off with Grit in Moab: Girls Outscore Boys as Both Teams Shine in Season Opener
The Monticello High School golf teams putted around in Moab, learning a few rules while playing their first official tournament of the season with both the boys' and girls' squads showcasing strong performances.
The Monticello Girls' team shot a team score of 370 with senior Cambree Chamberlain and senior Alise Lewis both carding a score of 89. Senior Alli Young shot a 91, and newcomer freshman LE Olson who impressed with an opening 100.
Also playing golf for the girls this season are Lili and Jane Burton, Rebecca Chamberlain, Olivia Plemons, Xymenah Alvarado, and Cailyn Harrod.
On the boys' side, the Monticello Boys' Golf team posted a team score of 373, narrowly trailing the girls at the end of 18 holes.
The top performer for the boys was Traken Lee, also carding an 89.
He was followed by junior Jackson Keyes and sophomore Canyon Christensen, who both shot 93.
Kooper Nielson, also a junior, secured the fourth spot on the team with a score of 98.
Also playing for the boys are Levi and Spencer Conway, John Leber, Noah Padilla, and Ryan Holt.
Moab’s golf course was in the early stages of recovery from a hard winter and played a bit difficult at the time of the tournament.
Playing on the rough course only showed Monticello’s grit and ability to make adjustments when the situation was not favorable.
It didn’t matter if the ball was in the perfect lie on top of some grass or in a sand patch where the sand wasn’t supposed to be, Monticello just kept pushing through and showed off their potential early in the season.
The Buckaroos will move on past Moab and onto “greener pastures” to play their next 18 holes at the Green River Golf Course on Wednesday, March 26th.
It will be the second official tournament of the year and both the boys and girls teams from Monticello are looking to improve their team scores and notch another couple wins.
Head Coach Nathan Chamberlin had some words regarding the team in general and this upcoming tee time,
“The coaching staff is optimistic about this season, with the experience of our seniors and the energy of the younger golfers, we are looking forward to a successful season. After a few months of hitting on artificial surfaces, the kids are excited to actually play on a course with grass in Green River this week.”
