Treydon Harris - Monticello senior

Head Coach Kent Adair: “Treydon works hard and tries to do the things you tell him to do. He listens to the coaches and is a coachable wrestler. He worked through his bad habits to overcome them. He is really good to the younger wrestlers and tries to help them and mentor them. He has always had high goals and has worked hard to achieve them. He is one of only 14 two-time state champions at MHS. He is service-oriented through his church and tries to help others. He was a team captain this year.”

Javlin Robison - Monticello senior
1A wrestling runner-up

Head Coach Kent Adair: “Jav is a self-starter as a wrestler. He pushes himself really hard every day so he gets in great shape and he wins a lot of matches because he has the strength and energy to keep going when others don’t. Jav hates to lose so he never stops on the mat because he would rather win. He works hard all the time at practice and in matches. There is no quit in Jav. He gets in really good shape and has a huge motor because of it. Javlin made the state finals match two years in a row in tough weight classes. He was a team captain this year.”

Josh Wheeler - Monticello senior
1A wrestling third place

Head Coach Kent Adair: “Josh is a good wrestler and he works hard. He has wrestled since he was a little boy and has set high goals for himself and worked toward them. His wrestling improved every year as he strived to meet his goals. He didn’t quit when things were hard. He had heartbreaking losses in the semifinals the past two years at state but came back strong and placed third both years. He was a team captain this year.”

Tyson Wheeler - Monticello sophomore
1A wrestling third place

Head Coach Kent Adair: “Tyson is a fun kid to be around and a good wrestler. He works hard on the moves he likes and figures out how to do them very well. He has improved every year and is a good teammate and good wrestling partner with the others in the room. He showed a lot of determination at the state tournament when he came back and beat the kid who beat him in the first round in the consolation championships.”

Additional comments from Coach Adair: “The wrestlers this year were great citizens and representatives of Monticello and MHS. We received compliments everywhere we went about how respectful our wrestlers were. Several referees at the state tournament praised our wrestlers for their sportsmanship and how hard they worked in their matches.”

Marcus Denny - Whitehorse senior
1A wrestling third place

Head Coach Sheldon Blackwater: “Marcus Denny first joined wrestling in the sixth grade with a local program known as the Montezuma Creek Roughnecks. He told me that he enjoyed it and wishes he had only begun sooner. His freshman year was a little challenging for him to be part of the high school competition level. He realized the sport needed a lot more focus and strategy so that’s when he really started opening his mind on strength. Marcus has always been a great athlete but the sport has tested him on so many levels. It changed his perspective on how to channel his focus and determination in order to achieve his goals.
“Throughout his high school years education was always prioritized by his family and, of course, his coach. In order for him to keep competing or showing up to practice he learned he must also work hard on his schooling and, with the lifestyle he has, he also must perform for his family. Marcus grew up on the Navajo Nation and was raised with livestock and learned how to care for other beings than himself. Marcus Denny is a great wrestler and has tremendous potential. I look forward to seeing how far he can go with the new characteristics he picked up from wrestling.
“He pushes himself every day to be his greatest self with his family, his friends, and his community. Marcus has placed twice in the Utah 1A State Championships. He took second place in his junior year (last season) and third place this year. Marcus was team captain for Whitehorse High School his junior and senior years as well. With that I say again, I look forward to seeing how far Marcus Denny will achieve his greater self.”
