A former Monticello resident has made it to the big-time in one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Aapree Sheeran, daughter of Dan and Pam Sheeran, plays professional women’s Ultimate Frisbee for the Utah Wild, based in Salt Lake City.
The Wild finished second in the Western Ultimate League Championship on June 2 in Denver, CO, suffering a 20-12 loss to the host Colorado Alpenglow.
Sheeran began to go by her first name, Cass, when she began college, and now that she’s married she has a different last name also – Williams.
Williams has played with the Wild since the team was founded in 2019. She began on the defensive line, but in her second season she moved to the offensive line to play her current position, cutter.
In 2024 she scored six goals and collected five assists, one block, 231 throwing yards, and 729 receiving yards. The upcoming season will be her fifth with the team.
The Wild won the Winter Cup in their first season of competition and have qualified for the Western Ultimate League Championship Weekend (top four teams) every season of their existence.
There are currently six teams playing in the league: The Utah Wild, Colorado Alpenglow, Arizona Sidewinders, Seattle Tempest, San Diego Superbloom, and Bay Area Falcons.
Williams’s career began on the Monticello High School football field during night games in the early-to-mid-2000s. A large number of athletes from across the country competed in those contests for over a decade.
Ultimate Frisbee, now known simply as “Ultimate” is not for the faint of heart. Often described as a cross between soccer, football, and basketball, it’s an excellent athletic outlet, requiring a great deal of speed, endurance, stamina, and accuracy.
On offense the object is for “throwers” to pass the disc down the field to their teammates until a catch is made in the end zone for a goal. The defense’s job is to block or intercept the offensive team’s passes.
It’s a fast-moving, non-contact, self-refereed game – a perfect balance of competitiveness and sportsmanship and a fun way to stay in shape.
The Western Ultimate League season runs from March to June each year and all the games are free to watch on YouTube.
