Helquist gets sixth place and San Juan wrestlers finish 15th at state
San Juan High School freshman wrestler Deklan Helquist went 3-2 at 106 pounds to lead the way for the Broncos with a sixth place result at the 3A state wrestling tournament this past week.
The Broncos finished in 15th place as a team with 22 points at the event, which was held at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield on Friday, February 19.
Helquist got three wins by fall in the fifth-place bracket over Landon Bagley of South Sevier, Logan Eagar of Providence Hall, and Tyler Payne of Juab. His losses were to Richfield’s Drexton Torgerson in round one and Kole Johnson of Grantsville in the fifth-place match.
At 113 pounds, fellow freshman Parker Snyder beat Pat Cornejo of American Leadership Academy by fall in just 1:04 to open his weekend.
But he suffered back-to-back losses to South Sevier’s Mason Gardner in the quarterfinals and Braxton Seiner of Juab in the consolation second round.
Bronco sophomore Callen Burke lost in the first round to Ryker Adams of Morgan at 195 pounds but bounced back for two wins by fall in consolation matches over Jonas Floyd of Grantsville and Delta’s Cooper Nielson.
Burke’s season came to a close in the fifth-place semifinals against Brandon Dutson of Delta.
Other wrestlers who battled hard for San Juan at the state tourney were junior Jeter Perkins at 152 pounds and junior Zach Palmer at 170 pounds.
