Intense basketball week for 1A teams

The Monument Valley boys and girls teams went 2-0 last week with both teams getting wins over Navajo Pine and Pinnacle Academy.

Basketball action began on January 25 in Navajo NM, where the Cougars took it to the Warriors.

In the girls contest, the Cougars earned a 57-28 victory by dominating from wire to wire. The Cougars were led in scoring by Raemi Nez, who finished with 18 points. Neveah Wilson scored 10 for the Cougars and Lakenya Begaye added eight.

In the boys game, the Cougars fell behind 12-11 in the first quarter but came back to score 23, 22, and 26 in the final three quarters for an 82-37 victory.

The boys kept their winning ways on Friday, beating region foe Pinnacle 56-48 at home to improve to 8-3 on the year.

The girls also got the win over Pinnacle, beating the Panthers 52-21 and improving to 9-2 on the year. 

The Lady Cougars saw nine players score on the stat sheet. They were led by Wilson who scored 13 on the game, while Sonomie Bigman and Chalyshia Tsosie finished with eight points each.

Elsewhere in Region 23 action, the Monticello Buckaroo’s boys team went 0-2 on the week.

The Bucks dropped a close home game to Montezuma-Cortez on January 25, 62-54.

Monticello was led by Boston Freestone with 18 points on the game. Landon Ewart added ten while Donavan Atwood finished with eight.

On January 28, the Buckaroos traveled to Montezuma Creek to take on Whitehorse.

The Raiders earned the 58-51 victory with D’Wayne Nakai leading the Raiders with 16 points, including four deep threes. Tyrell Benally finished with 13 points, while Weston Manygoats added 12 for the Raiders in the victory.

The Buckaroos were led by Boston Freestone, who finished the night with 23 points. Ewart once again added ten points while Tommy Sheeran also added ten for Monticello.

The game saw the Raiders improve to 12-7 on the year, while the Bucks fell to 5-10.
