Lady Broncos take down #1 Enterprise, continue to cruise

The San Juan High School volleyball team has been utterly dominant this season, leaving foe after foe languishing in the dust in a seemingly never-ending string of easy victories.
Entering this week the Lady Broncos possessed a 21-2 record and sat in the #1 spot in the Utah 2A standings. Their four wins over the past two weeks included a five-set thriller against then #1 Enterprise on September 27.
On September 26 San Juan swept Beaver on the road 25-8, 25-16, and 25-22. Morgann McPherson knocked down 14 kills, Keezie Flannery and Averie Gilson served up four aces and collected 12 digs apiece, and Flannery assisted on 24 points.
The following night the Lady Broncos finished their road trip with an exciting battle against #1 Enterprise. They had lost their first meeting with the Lady Wolves 3-2 on September 4 in Blanding.
San Juan won the opening set 25-20 but Enterprise rallied to win set two 25-22. The Lady Wolves took control of the match with a 27-25 win in the third set.
The Lady Broncos earned an impressive 26-24 win in the fourth set to stave off a loss, then closed out the home team with a 15-12 win in the fifth and final set.
The win moved San Juan into the #1 spot in the 2A classification and dropped Enterprise to the #2 slot. McPherson collected an amazing 25 kills in the match with Faith Flannery getting 18.
Averie Gilson led servers with four aces, Havoc Laws got nine blocks on the night, Averie Gilson led the team with 20 digs, and Keezie Flannery had an amazing 48 assists.
This past weekend the Lady Broncos kept their momentum rolling with easy straight-set homecoming wins over Parowan on October 3 and South Sevier on October 4.
Not only is San Juan one of the most dominant volleyball teams in the state, there are some individual players factoring among the top in the state also.
Keezie Flannery’s 74 serving aces are second-most in the state while Averie Gilson’s 65 rank fourth. Flannery’s 664 assists are third in the state, and Morgann McPherson’s 343 kills are tied for sixth.
San Juan is down to just three matches remaining in the regular season and they’re eyeing a long run in the state tournament that begins in two weeks.
The team will play just one game this week – Thursday, October 9 at 3A Manti. On Tuesday, October 14 the Lady Broncos will host the rival Grand County Lady Red Devils.
They’ll close out their regular season on the road Thursday, October 16 against 6A Riverton.
