After a slow start to the season the Monticello High School volleyball team has won five of their last six games in the past three weeks, improving their record to 7-5 overall and 4-0 in Region 19 play.
The Lady Buckaroos are ranked eighth in the Utah 1A standings heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Monticello won three of the four games they played in the past two weeks including victories over Monument Valley, Whitehorse, and Altamont.
On September 16 the Lady Bucks beat Monument Valley in a four-set battle. They won set one 25-18, then took a 2-0 advantage with a 25-19 win in set two.
The Lady Cougars rallied to down Monticello 25-15 in the third set, but the Lady Bucks gathered themselves and closed out the match with a strong 25-14 set four win.
This past Tuesday, September 23 MHS opened a three-match week at home against Whitehorse. They wasted no time dispatching their Region 19 rivals with a straight-sets win 25-10, 25-18, and 25-14.
The Lady Buckaroos’ only loss in the past six games came on their trip to Moab this past Wednesday, September 24. In their first match with Grand County in the 2025 season opener Monticello played their rivals tenaciously, but suffered a straight-sets loss.
In their second and final meeting this season Monticello again played well against Grand County. After falling behind with a 25-14 loss in set one the Lady Bucks stormed back for a hard-fought 25-22 victory in set two.
But the Lady Red Devils reestablished momentum with a 25-14 win in set three. Monticello battled relentlessly in the fourth set, but Grand held on to close them out 25-21.
The Lady Bucks didn’t have much time to regroup after the tough loss. They hit the road on Friday, September 26 for a trip to Altamont.
Monticello took a 2-0 lead in the match with dominant wins in the opening sets, 25-16 and 25-14. They had to work a little harder in set three, but were still able to close out the Lady Longhorns 26-24.
The Lady Buckaroos have built some solid momentum over the course of the past three weeks and will look to maintain that momentum with some key games coming up in the closing weeks of the season.
To open this week they traveled to Green River and swept the Lady Pirates 3-0 on Tuesday, September 30.
They’ll host Rock Point, AZ on Friday, October 3, then prepare for the trip to Monument Valley next Tuesday, October 7.
