Local Athletes compete at Blue Mountain Invite in Monticello

Local San Juan County teams stayed close to home running and throwing at the Blue Mountain Invitational at Monticello High on April 25. A typical windy day in San Juan county contributed to some great marks or challenges depending on which way the athletes were facing.
The Monticello girls won their meet while the San Juan Broncos won the boys meet. On the girls side San Juan finished third, Whitehorse fourth and Monument Valley fifth. On the boys side Monticello finished third, Whitehorse fourth and Monument Valley fifth.
MONTICELLO
In their home meet the Lady Buckaroos were led by Marlee Mack who finished first in the 100 meter dash running a 12.84 seconds, the 100 (15.37) and 300 (48.57) meter hurdles and the long jump (17 feet and 8.5 inches). Also winning an event was Marah Long in the 3200 meter run (12 minutes 56 seconds), while Maron Freestone won the 400 meter dash (1:04). The girls team also won the medley relay at the meet (5:04).
Finishing in 2nd place for Monticello included Lilli Burton in the 400, Kyleigh Adair in the shot put, Ayla Carling in the 1600 meter run, and Freestone in the high jump.
Finishing in third for the Bucks included Madison Adair in the discus, Allie Carling in the 400, Ayla Carling in the 800 meter run, Long in the 200 meter dash, Freestone in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, and the 4x100 relay team.
The Monticello boys were led by a first place finish from Carter Rogers in the 100 (11.16), and a first place finish by Tavon Black in the 200 (23.12). The two combined with teammates to win the 4x100 meter relay as well (46.21). The Buckaroo boys also won the medley relay race (4:05).
Earning second place finishes for Monticello included Rogers in the 200 and Black in the 100. Eli Carling finished 2nd in the 1600 meter run.
Finishing third for the Monticello boys included Kooper Nielson in the 400, Seth Taylor in the 300 hurdles and the long jump as well as Carling in the 800.
SAN JUAN
The Bronco boys team was led by Tripp Palmer who won three events including the high jump (six feet seven inches), long jump (20 feet 1.25 inches) and javelin (157 feet 11 inches). Teammate Abe Lyman won the 400 (56.67) and 1600 meter races (5:16), while Andrew Nielson won the 110 hurdles (16.63) and Cooper Laws won the 300 hurdles (44.21).
Finishing in 2nd place for the broncos included Platte Lyman in the 800, Brig Palmer in the 100 hurdles, JD Palmer in the shot put, Thomas Hardin in the discuss, Stetson Black in the long jump, Miken Keith in the javelin and Nielson in the 300 hurdles. The Broncos also finished 2nd place in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Finishing in third place in events for San Juan included Keith finishing third in the 100 and 200, while Laws finished third in the 110 hurdles, and Hardin in the shot put. JD Palmer finished third in the high jump while Platte Lyman finished third in the 3200, the Broncos also finished third in the medley relay.
The San Juan girls team was led by Hayden Shumway who won the shot put (31 feet 2 inches), while teammate Adison Ivins won the high jump (4 feet 11 inches).
Finishing 2nd for the girls included Addi Helquist in the 200, Sincere Nez in the 3200 and Shumway in the discuss. The girls 4x100 and medley relays also finished in 2nd place.
Earning third place finishes included Ada Lyman in the 3200 and Aspyn Ivins in the long jump, Helquist in the 100 and Nez in the 1600.
WHITEHORSE
The Whitehorse boys were led by Elam Etsitty who finished 2nd in the 400, also finishing 2nd was the Raiders medley relay team.
The Whitehorse girls were led by third place finishes for Shandiin Roberts in the javelin, Laylah Benally in the high jump and a third place finish for the medley relay.
MONUMENT VALLEY
Monument Valley girls saw Naomi White win the javelin event (88 feet 8 inches) with teammate Nizhoni Sloan right behind her in 2nd place. The highest finisher for the Cougar boys team was Josiah Gipe finishing in sixth place in the 3200.
