San Juan and Monticello squared off for a pair of 2A East Region games this past week. The first game was played in Monticello on Tuesday, April 18.
Both teams got their bats going early and didn’t slow down throughout the game. The game was close, with the lead going back and forth for much of the first six innings.
In fact, the Broncos held just a one run lead over the Bucks, 11-10, heading into the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, San Juan took over, exploding for 22 runs to defeat Monticello 33-11.
Shaw Nielson notched the win for San Juan while Thomas Anderson was tagged with the loss for Monticello.
Nielson, Trez Perkins and Connor Palmer combined to give up ten hits and eleven runs while striking out nine and walking six.
In addition to Anderson, Tyler Draper, Paul DeAnda and Kayden Draper all saw action from the mound. The four collectively surrendered 30 hits, 33 runs, struck out four and walked nine.
Kavika Su’eSu’e, Jordan Blake and Jay McDonald all homered for the Broncos, and Anderson punched one over the outfield fence for the Bucks.
With all the offense, a host of players finished with multiple RBIs. McDonald led both teams with six RBIs, followed by Bayl’r Eldredge with five.
Su’eSu’e and Jaxon Lee had four RBIs apiece, just one more than Blake and Connor Palmer and Tanner (TJ) Johnson who each finished with three, and Perkins and Nielson each had two RBIs on the day for the Broncos.
For the Bucks, Anderson drove in four runs and Hector Cordova pushed two across the plate. Perkins and TJ Johnson each swiped a base for the Broncos, while Anderson and Keaton Young each had a stolen base for the Bucks.
Game two in Blanding on Friday, April 21 was a little more one sided in favor of San Juan. The Broncos built an 18-0 lead by the bottom of the fourth inning. The game was called after San Juan held Monticello scoreless in the top of the fifth.
San Juan will wrap up their regular season with two games against Grand County, the first of which was Tuesday, April 25 in Moab. Game two will be in Blanding on Friday, April 28. It begins at 3:30 p.m.
