Monticello baseball team battles tough opponents, gets set for state tournament

It has been a challenging season for the Monticello High School baseball team.

The Buckaroos are 0-13 on the year following a 2A East doubleheader sweep against North Summit on the road on Thursday, April 21. Nucla, a top-ten team in Colorado 1A baseball, toppled the Bucks on Tuesday, April 19 on the MHS ball diamond.

Against North Summit, Monticello got their best offensive output of the season, scoring 16 runs combined.

The Buckaroos were leading game one 5-0 before the Braves put 15 runners across the plate in the last four innings to down MHS. Monticello trailed for the entirety of game two, but battled hard.

Entering the final inning they were down 10-2. The Bucks scored three runs, but their rally fell short in a 10-5 final. MHS is down to just three games to close out the regular season. They faced the Dove Creek, CO Bulldogs on Tuesday, April 26, too late for the press deadline.

On Thursday, April 28 they host the Providence Hall Patriots before a short road trip to Dove Creek to take on the Bulldogs in the last game of the regular season.

The Buckaroos are set to begin the 2A state tournament on May 7 in pod play on the road. The most likely possibilities for game locations are Duchesne or Blanding.
