Monticello basketball teams seasons come to a close
Monticello boys and girls basketball seasons came to an end last week.
The Buckaroo boys earned the #10 seed and opened play against the #23 seed Dugway Mustangs in the first round of the 1A basketball state tournament on February 17.
The Monticello boys controlled the game from tip-off to finish earning a 66-19 victory at home.
Cache Young led the team with 16 points in the game while Jackson Keyes scored 14 for the Bucks. Triston Felix scored nine, Kooper Nielson had eight, and Kord Young scored seven. Seth Taylor and Grant Wiggington each had four points while Jaeden Camacho and Brandt Mack had two points each.
Keyes and Cache Young each had a double-double with the pair each pulling in 11 rebounds. Cache Young also recorded six assists while Nielson had five. Kord Young ripped five steals, while Keyes had four and Nielson had three.
The win advanced the Buckaroo boys to the second round where they faced the #7 seed Green River Pirates.
In the third matchup of the season Monticello kept the score close through one quarter 16-10 at halftime the Pirates extended their lead 28-17. After three quarters Monticello narrowed the gap 42-34 but Green River pulled away in the final frame to earn the 58-40 victory.
In that game Monticello was led by Kord and Cache Young who each finished with 13 points. Jackson Keyes scored seven, Brandt Mack had five and Kooper Nielson scored two.
Monticello finished the season with a 13-11 record including 6-2 in region play to finish second in Region 19.
Monticello was led on the season in points per game by Cache Young who averaged 14.7, while Kord Young averaged 10.9 and Keyes averaged 8.9. Cache also led the team in rebounds per game averaging 6.2 while Kord averaged 5.6 and Keyes averaged 4.6
Nielson led the team in assists per game averaging 4.0, while Cache averaged 2.8 and Keyes had 1.4.
Cache also led the team averaging 1.9 steals per game, while Kord averaged 1.8 and Nielson averaged 1.7. Kord Young also averaged 0.5 blocks per game.
Buckaroo fans will say goodbye to seniors Jackson Keyes, Kooper Nielson, Jaeden Camacho, Logan Bowles and Seth Taylor.
The Monticello girls basketball team season ended in the first round of the 1A girls state basketball tournament on February 18.
The #17 seed Bucks made the trip to Water Canyon to play the #16 seed Wildcats.
Monticello tied Water Canyon 12-12 after one quarter but the Wildcats had a big second quarter to take a 33-22 lead at halftime. Monticello chipped into the lead in the third quarter to trail 43-38 after three but ultimately fell 62-50.
The Monticello girls finished the season with a 7-17 record including 4-4 in region play to finish third in Region 19.
Team leaders for the season included Maron Freestone averaging 12.6 points per game, Marlee Mack led the team in rebounds per game 6.5, steals 3.4 and blocks 0.4. Makenna Peterson led the team averaging 2.4 assists per game.
Monticello seniors include Marlee Mack, Makenna Peterson, Tessa Slade, and Nicole Francom.
