Monticello cross country team hosts Blue Mountain Classic

Monticello High School hosted the annual Blue Mountain Classic cross country race on September 4 at the Hideout Golf Club in Monticello.
Buckaroo Eli Carling won the boys race, completing the five-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 19 seconds.
Close behind were four San Juan Broncos who all placed in the top seven and led their team to an overall victory in the team race with a score of 16.
Sophomore Peter Lyman of San Juan finished second overall in 17:44, with teammates senior Platte Lyman third overall in 17:59, junior Keegan McCullough fifth in 18:33, and senior Jack Kartchner sixth in 18:37.
Other Bronco racers included James Gosney in tenth (19:15), Oren Bradford 15th (20:05), Oliver Moses 18th (20:57), Nick Jones, Ashtin Nielson, Devan Brown, Saddler Nielson, Levi Mahoney, and Connor Pincock.
Monticello senior Charlie Welch finished in the top ten on his home course in 19:11, with sophomore teammates Linden English 13th (19:37), and Gabe Long 19th (21:01).
The top four finishers scored 42 points for Monticello and finished third overall behind San Juan and Provo high schools.
Other Buckaroo racers include Christian Hunt, Adrian Boone, Alejandro Austin, and Bodhi Christensen.
The top racer for Whitehorse High School was freshman Harley Jim, followed by Braxton Kinsel, Aiden Smith, and Brayden Kinsel.
Darnell Benally, a senior for Monument Valley High School, was 24th overall.
Sincere Nez, a senior from San Juan, was the top local finisher in the girls race. Nez completed the course in 21:00 and finished second behind Carly Kroll of Mancos.
Junior Allie Carling, of Monticello, led the Buckaroos with a fifth-place finish in 21:15.
Senior LaKyara Begay was the top racer for the Whitehorse Lady Raiders, finishing 13th overall. Other Whitehorse runners included Maria Yellowman, Kaitlyn Mitchell, Laylah Benally, Aubrey Mitchell, Mikey Little, Brandilyn John, La’Rayia Robinson, and Emily Bahe.
The Lady Bronco scorers finished fourth in the team race, including Ada Lyman (11th), Ava Duke (19th), and Braylyn Eddie (28th).
Other San Juan girls Harmony Oshley, Sariah Sweeten, Eihaazbah Dejolie, and Delilah Tahy.
The Lady Buckaroos finished fifth overall, with Latalia O’Harra (15th), Murryn Suttlemyre (20th), and Xymenah Alvarado (23rd) scoring for the team.
Other Monticello girls competing in the race include Brenna Baxter and Mikaylah Gillette.
The race was hosted at the Hideout Golf Club as a result of construction activity at the Loyds Lake trail, where the race is generally held.
