Monticello defeated Whitehorse in a showdown between 8-player football rivals on October 10 by a score of 42-14.
Monticello opened the game receiving the opening kick of the game.
The Buckaroos took the ball 50-yard on eight plays in their first drive capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Landon Shumway an unsuccessful point-after-try made the score 6-0 with under 9 minutes to go in the first quarter.
Shumway led the Buckaroos in rushing on the night drawing praise from teammate Seth Taylor in the postgame
“Landon did really good, he had a lot of good strong runs especially when we need them.”
Shumway says he enjoys scoring touchdowns but it’s not his favorite part of the game.
“It feels pretty good, but I really like the drive itself a lot better”
Shumway ate up yards for the Buckaroos throughout the game, which Shumway noted was helped greatly by his teammate Seth Taylor.
“Seth and the line they had dang good blocks, they really did work hard with pushing those bigger guys. They were a lot bigger than they were and they did dang good”
Taylor shared postgame they were taught to move their feet and drive against a bigger front in Whitehorse.
The Raiders first possession was three-plays and a punt but a miss-handling of the return lead to a recovery at the 35 yard line by Tristan Black giving Whitehorse another set of downs. The Raiders defense once again was pushed back by the Buckaroos and a low snap on fourth down lead to a tackle of the punter giving Monticello’s offense the ball at the 9-yard line.
Two plays later Tavon Black ran into the endzone from two-yards out to make the score 12-0 with five minutes left in the first quarter.
The Buckaroo defense then forced their first turnover of the game when Jaeden Camacho grabbed an intersection and returned it to the 13-yard line. Monticello’s offense responded immediately with a 13-yard pass from Jackson Keyes to Carter Rogers for a touchdown.
Good protection on the offensive line was key for the Buckaroos passing game as well, which Taylor provided along with the help of his teammates.
“Jarum and Payton both good guards, even when there’s a two-man front they rarely need my help”
Tavon Black added the two-point conversion to make the score 20-0 for Monticello with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter.
The Raiders next possession did move the chains for a first-down once but the Raiders were pushed back and forced to punt giving Monticello the ball at the 34-yard line.

The Raiders threw a 17-yard pass from Tristan Black to Aiden Hamm but an incomplete pass and an 8-yard run up the middle meant the Raiders had to use their final time-out. A run out of bounds gave the Raiders a first and goal at the nine-yard line with 17-seconds left but the next play a sack in bounds kept the Raiders from putting points on the board in the first half with the score favoring Monticello 35-0.
