Monticello defeats Whitehorse in inter-county football battle
In a show-down between county rivals the Monticello Buckaroos defeated the Whitehorse Raiders in Monticello on October 6. The Bucks ran ahead in the first half to beat the Raiders by a final score of 48-12.
The Buckaroos struck first on the opening drive going 54 yards on the drive, capped off with a 2-yard touchdown run by Tavon Black. An unsuccessful two-point try made the score 6-0. On the ensuing kick-off, the Buckaroos kicked it deep and Zac Thayn forced a fumble recovered by Skyler Peterson to set up Monticello with a short field.
The Buckaroo's second score came when Jackson Keyes found Thayn in the back of the endzone for a 14-yard touchdown throw and catch—making the score 12-0.
After a three-and-out for the Raiders offense, the Buckaroos once again drove and scored capping the drive with a 13-yard pass from JD McDonald to Robert Morrison. The score and extra point kicked by McDonald made the score 19-0.
The Buckaroos scored once more in the first quarter when Keyes threw a 60-yard bomb to McDonald who added an extra point kick to make the score 26-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Monticello added another score when Thayn caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from McDonald who added the kick to make the score 33-0.
On the ensuing drive the Raiders 4th down punt was given troubles with a high snap, Monticello’s Black came crashing in to make a tackle in the end zone for a two-point safety.
Black added the next score for Monticello when he caught a 4-yard pass from McDonald to make the score 41-0.
On Monticello’s next possession, Kaleb Joe stepped in front of a Cameron Carpenter pass to intercept the ball and give the Raiders their first turnover of the game.
The Buckaroos added their last score of the game in the second quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run by Thomas Fullmer and a kick by McDonald.
Morrison forced a fumble for the Buckaroos recovered by McDonald for the final turnover in the game.
The second half saw success for the Raiders.
In the 4th quarter, Tristan Black found Kaleb Joe running across the field for a big completion. Joe broke a tackle and sprinted to the end zone on a 60-yard touchdown pass.
The Raiders scored again in the 4th quarter when Aiden Hamm ran from 7 yards out into the end zone to score the final points of the game. The final score favored Monticello 48-12.
Both teams have a quick turnaround with the Raiders hosting the Monument Valley Cougars on Wednesday, October 11 with kickoff at 6:00 pm.
Monticello hosts Norwood on Thursday, October 12 with kickoff at 7:00 pm.
