Monticello football earns solid 35-8 win in Altamont

The Monticello Buckaroo football team earned a win on the road against the Altamont Longhorns on September 9 by a score of 35-8.
The win improved the Bucks to 2-2 on the year, the Bucks are ranked #3 in the opening RPI rankings by the state, the Longhorns are ranked #4.
The Bucks started off hot on Friday night. On the first play from scrimmage Easton Young received a hand-off on a jet-sweep gaining 43-yards and setting up the rest of the drive well inside Longhorn territory.
With the Longhorns concerned about running to the edges Buckaroo running backs Thomas Fullmer and Javelin Robison followed blocking from Donny and Mason Atwood and Nic Lundell up the middle of the field. The drive was capped off by a four-yard run from Robison into the endzone.
On the point after attempt a low snap sent holder Young into a scramble. Young found Mason Atwood in the endzone to give the Bucks an 8-0 lead in the first minute of the game.
Altamont crossed mid-field on their first offensive series of the game but the Longhorns drive stalled on a fourth-down attempt.
On the Buckaroos second offensive possession, quarterback JD McDonald passed to an open Young for a 51-yard touchdown score. A failed point-after attempt made the score 14-0 in the first quarter.
After another defensive stop Monticello got to work on offense in the second quarter with a short field the Buckaroos drove to the eight-yard line where Robison added his second touchdown of the game to make the score 20-0.
Later in the quarter McDonald connected again with Young for a 25-yard score to make the score 28-0 at halftime.
The second half opened with stout defense as both teams forced a few punts, with two minutes to go in the third quarter Young returned on punt from the 42-yard line all the way into the end zone to give Monticello its final score of the night as their lead was increased 35-0.
The Longhorns added their own score on the game with six minutes to go in the game on a five-yard run and a successful two-point conversion.
Altamont’s last offensive series of the game ended when Young grabbed an interception and the Buckaroos were able to run out the clock.
The JV squad beat the Utah School for the Deaf & Blind on Sep. 10 by a score of 60-30.
