Monticello girls take seventh in annual Farm Bureau Track and Field Invitational in Price

The Monticello and San Juan high school track and field teams traveled to Price on Saturday, March 15 to compete in the Farm Bureau Invitational at Carbon High School.
Because San Juan County schools were in spring break this past week the teams were by no means operating at full strength. Still, they made a little noise at the annual event.
The Monticello girls led the way, scoring 34 points to finish in seventh place among the 15 girls teams in attendance. Junior Marlee Mack had an outstanding day for the Lady Buckaroos.
She won the 100-meter hurdles when she crossed the line in 16.29. She finished second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.64.
She was also the runner-up in the long jump, sailing 16 feet, five inches. And she set a new personal record of 13.34 in the 100-meter dash, taking seventh overall in that event.
Sophomore Maron Freestone also put together a good day in Price with a fourth-place finish in the girls 100 hurdles, crossing the line in 18.47.
She took ninth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.75 and she was tenth in the high jump when she cleared four feet, eight inches.
Sophomore Josie Mack rounded out the Monticello girls’ effort with two 14th-place finishes in hurdles. Her 19.60 in the 100 hurdles is a new personal record and she finished in 56.92 in the 300 hurdles.
The top performances for the Buckaroo boys included an 18th-place finish for senior Tavon Black in the 200-meter dash in 24.52. Junior Jaeden Camacho crossed the line 23rd in 24.78 in that event.
And junior Seth Taylor took 27th place in the boys 110-meter hurdles when he crossed the line in 22.32.
The San Juan girls scored 15 points in their competition to tie Manti for 11th place in the team standings. Senior Savannah Richmond won the discus competition by almost four feet with her throw of 111-5. She also took 11th in the shot put with a distance of 28-4.
Junior Keezie Flannery was fourth in the girls high jump when she cleared four feet, ten inches. She set a new personal record of 14-2.75 in the long jump to finish 13th overall.
Sophomore Saraeya Mills rounded out the Lady Broncos’ top-20 finishes with an 18th-place performance in the discus competition with a distance of 70-7.
The San Juan boys mustered three points to finish 13th as a team. The 4x100 relay team earned those points with their sixth-place finish in 46.94 seconds.
Junior Jagger Nieves earned the top individual result for the Bronco boys with a 10th-place finish in the 200 meter in 24.21.
Senior JD Palmer took 11th in the javelin with a throw of 128-9. He was 14th in the shot put with a 36-5. And he set a new personal record in the discus with a throw of 104-3.5, good enough for 15th place.
Junior Stetson Black was 14th in the javelin with a 125-0.5. He took 16th in the discus with a new personal record 103-9.5.
Sophomore Miken Keith was 17th in the javelin with a 123-4 and freshman Max Sterns took 18th in the long jump with a 17-8.75.
With spring break in the books, area track and field teams are set to get the season underway in earnest.
San Juan will host the annual San Juan County Championships this Friday, March 21 with Monticello, Monument Valley, Whitehorse, Green River, and Pinnacle Academy all set to attend.
