On Wednesday, March 26 the Monticello boys and girls golf teams played at the Green River Golf Course for the first time this year and their second consecutive away match. Both teams played well enough to bring back a second consecutive region win.
Overall, the boys’ score was 362, defeating Green River, who didn’t qualify for a team total, and Pinnacle Canyon who shot a 540. Monticello was led by Traken Lee who shot an 85, finding the majority of his fairways off the tee box and making some clutch putts.
Lee was followed closely by Canyon Christensen who scored an 87, Jackson Keyes with a 93, and Kooper Nielson who rolled in with a 99. Ryan Holt and John Leber both turned in official score cards but did not count toward the team total. Holt shot a 97 and Leber a 119.
The Lady Buckaroos also overpowered both Green River and Pinnacle Canyon with a combined score of 398. Neither Green River nor Pinnacle had enough official scores to qualify a team score.
Cambree Chamberlain led the girls with a score of 88, Alise Lewis shot an 89, Lilli Burton carded a 110, and LE Olson finished fourth with a final score of 111.
Both Monticello teams took advantage of an off week on the schedule this past week and headed for The Links at Sleepy Ridge in Orem and Mountain View Golf Course in West Jordan for a couple practice rounds. Mountain View will host the state championships later in the season.
At Sleepy Ridge on Wednesday, April 2 Alise Lewis finished with a 90, Cambree Chamberlin carded a 99, and Ali Young and LE Olson both marked the course with a 101. Jane Burton finished with a 118, narrowly defeating her sister Lili who scored a 119.
The boys finished with Traken Lee atop the pack with his 85. Kooper Nielson shot a 91, Canyon Christensen 95, Jackson Keyes 96, and Ryan Holt signed off with a 118.
At 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 3 both golf teams teed off at The Mountain View Golf Course. The name was deemed appropriate as the course features a great view of the surrounding Wasatch Mountains on every hole.
With more open terrain on each hole, scores improved for the majority of the team. Keyes shot an 83, Nielson a 91, and Lee again finished on top with season-best 76. Christensen managed an 86 and Holt concluded with a 97.
For the girls team, Lewis and Olson finished tied for first with an impressive 90. Chamberlain was second with a 94, followed by Young with a 95. Lili eclipsed her sister Jane this time in the Battle of the Burtons with a 117 versus Jane’s 123.
Next, the Monticello golf teams will head to Price to play the Carbon Country Club. This will be their third match of the season and will take place on Wednesday, April 9.
