Monticello sweeps region meet

The Monticello boys and girls won the region 19 championship on Wednesday May 6 held in Monticello. The Whitehorse girls finished as runner-ups at the region meet while the Monument Valley girls finished in 3rd place.
In the region boys meet Pinnacle Canyon was runner-up with Whitehorse finishing third and Monument Valley fourth.
While the top six finishers earned points for their respective teams, San Juan County athletes who finished top three will be mentioned in this article.
The Monticello girls were led by Alex Marian who finished in 1st place in the 100, 200 and 400 to lead the way for the Bucks.
Olivia Plemons also won two region titles in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Also scoring well for the Bucks were Madison Adair who finished 1st in the discus and 3rd in the 100, while Makenna Peterson finished 1st in the 1600, and 3rd in both the 400 and 800.
Other Monticello region champions included Ali Carling in the 800, Deja La Giglia in the high jump, and Elise Taylor in the shot put.
Dani Black finished 2nd in the 300 hurdles and 3rd in the 200 while Lay Peterson was 2nd in the 100 and Murryn Suttlemyre finished 3rd in the 1600.
The Monticello girls 4x100 relay team also finished in 1st place.
The Monticello boys were led by a number of region champions including Kooper Nielson who finished 1st in the 200 and 2nd in the 100.
Carter Francom finished 1st in the javelin and 2nd in the discus. Cash Mack was 1st in the 100 and 3rd in the 200, Bryson Adair who was 1st in the 110 hurdles and 3rd in the 300 hurdles.
Also earning region championships were Eli Carling in the 800, McKay Nielson in the 300 hurdles, Charlie Welch in the 1600 and Kord Young in the high jump.
Earning runner-up honors were Thomas Morrison in the shot put, JJ Dekorreon Sanders in the 400, Christian Hunt in the 110 hurdles and Linden English in the 3200.
Monticello also won the 4x100 relay race.
The Whitehorse girls finished in 2nd place in the region meet. The Raiders were led by Maria Yellowman who won the region championship in the 3200 and finished 2nd in the high jump and 1600.
Shandiin Roberts finished 2nd in the discus and shot put as well as 3rd in the javelin. Keiarra Martin was runner-up in both the 200 and 400 and Laylah Benally was runner-up in the long jump.
The Monument Valley girls finished 3rd at the meet and were led by Summer Atene who was 2nd in the 800 and 3rd in the 3200.
Carmen Ramirez finished 2nd in the 3200. Finishing in third place for the Cougars were Zaira Holliday in the discus and Samara Sheppar in the shot put.
The Whitehorse boys finished 3rd at the region meet. Winning a region title for the Raiders was Hyatt Thomas who finished 1st in the 400 and 2nd in the high jump.
Elam Etsitty finished 2nd in the 800 and high jump. Ethan Begay was also 2nd in the1600 and 3rd in the 400 and 800. Lance Tsinigine finished 3rd in the long jump.
The Monument Valley boys were 4th at the region meet led by Josiah Gipe who won a region title in the 3200 as well as 3rd in the 1600. Jake Deswood finished 3rd in the 3200.
While region champions secured a bid in the state track and field meet several other San Juan county athletes pre-qualified for the state meet with qualifying marks.
In all, 36 Monticello athletes, 10 Whitehorse athletes and five Monument Valley athletes qualified for the state meet taking place at BYU in Provo May 15-16.
