Monticello third, San Juan eighth in All-Sports awards

Each year the Deseret News awards an annual All-Sports Award to High Schools in the six Utah classifications.
The award is meant to reflect the top overall athletic program in each classification, with schools earning points for finishing in the top eight in state competitions.
Ten points are awarded for first place and eight for second, then six points down to one for third through eighth places. Points are divided when teams tie.
Points are earned in football, cross country, golf, basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball, swimming, and lacrosse.
Among local San Juan County schools, the Monticello boys and girls both finished in third place.
The Monticello boys earned 33 points, led by a state championship in cross country and a runner-up trophy in football. They also earned a third-place finish in track, fourth in wrestling, and fifth in golf.
The Monticello girls earned 21 points, led by a runner-up trophy for golf, a fourth-place finish in cross-country, and fifth-place finishes in volleyball and track. The Buckaroos earned a combined 54 points to finish third in the combined 1A All-Sport category.
In the 2A ranks, the San Juan boys finished in fifth place with 29.5 points with their third-straight football state championship leading the way.
They also took third in cross country and wrestling, got fifth in track, and made a consolation quarterfinal appearance in baseball (worth points between fifth and sixth place).
The Lady Broncos finished in 13th place in the 2A classification with 11.5 points, led by a third-place finish in cross-country, a consolation quarterfinal appearance in softball, and a seventh-place finish in volleyball.
Combined, the Broncos finished with 41 points to earn eighth in the All-Sport category.
Finishing just outside the top ten in the 1A were Whitehorse and Monument Valley high schools.
The Whitehorse boys earned 4.5 points to finish in 11th place, with points coming from a seventh-place finish in cross country and a quarterfinal berth in football.
The Raider girls earned six points from a third-place finish in cross-country to earn tenth place. The team finished in a combined 11th place.
The Monument Valley boys earned 2.5 points from a quarterfinal berth in football to finish in 15th place. The girls earned five points for a fourth-place finish in basketball to finish in 11th place. The Cougars finished in a combined 12th place in the 1A All-Sport rankings.
Finishing first overall among the 2A boys was Beaver with 39.5 points. North Summit won the girls division with 38 points. Beaver won the combined 2A title with 72.5 points.
Panguitch won the 1A boys division with 47 points. The Rich girls finished first with 44 points. And Panguitch won the combined 1A title with 86 points.
The Deseret News has given the All-Sport award for the past 45 years. Monticello has won six times, in 1984, ’85, ’88, ’89, ’91 and ’92. San Juan High School won the award in 2001 and 2011.
