Monticello wrestlers compete in Norwood, CO then earn third place at Dave Smith Memorial in Price

It was a busy week for the Monticello Buckaroo wrestling team. Tuesday, December 5 they competed in a quad meet at Norwood, CO then they spent December 8-9 at the Dave Smith Memorial Tournament at Carbon High School in Price.
The team earned a third-place finish at Carbon, winning duals against Bonneville, Juan Diego, American Fork, Carbon, Carbon B, Dolores, and the “Extras” team. They were defeated by Orem and San Juan.
Freshman John Leber led the Buckaroos with a perfect 8-0 record on the weekend. He won seven matches by fall and had a 15-10 win to cap of his weekend. Senior Zac Thayn finished in second, earning a 6-1 record. Thayn won five matches by fall and had a 6-0 win.
Arturo Gutierrez and Landon Shumway each finished third at the tournament. Gutierrez had a 3-2 record with two falls and a 11-2 major decision win. Shumway finished the weekend 4-2 with two wins by fall and two technical fall wins, 17-1 and 20-4.
Ronnie Harris, Chandler Henderson, and Caleb Coleman all finished in fourth place with 6-3 records. Harris had five wins by fall and an exciting sudden victory (overtime win). Henderson and Coleman each won all six of their matches by fall.
Tavon Black and Jarum Robison each earned two wins by fall at the tournament. Thomas Fullmer had a win by fall and had a strong lead in a match that ended in a medical forfeit.
Camren Carpenter also had an exciting win by fall for the Buckaroos. Evan Carpenter and Cruise Shumway both worked hard and got good mat time at the tournament.
Earlier in the week the Buckaroos attended the Norwood quad where they faced Nucla, Dolores, and Norwood, winning all three duals.
Against Dolores, Landon Shumway, Ronnie Harris, Caleb Coleman, and Chandler Henderson all won matches by fall. Cruise Shumway and Anson Kendrick both were defeated.
Against Nucla Landon Shumway, Ronnie Harris, and Thomas Fullmer all won matches by fall. Zac Thayn and John Leber were defeated. Against Norwood Caleb Coleman and Thomas Fullmer each had wins by fall while Arturo Gutierrez was defeated.
This Friday and Saturday, December 15-16 the Buckaroos are traveling to compete in the Manti Holiday Classic. On Tuesday, December 19 they’ll host their first home dual of the season against Kayenta at 6:00 p.m.
